Position Description:
University Writing Director
The University Writing Director both oversees the University Writing Support Center (formerly the “Write Site”) and serves as facilitator of writing instruction at the University, including of Writing Intensive requirements. Duties include the following.
Oversight of the University Writing Support Center (UWSC)
• Determine staffing needs, hire, train, and supervise the UWSC student tutors.
• Coordinate UWSC outreach, such as class presentations or satellite tutoring, and
supervise student tutors who conduct outreach activities.
• Keep records and prepare annual reports on UWSC usage.
• Facilitate UWSC publicity, e.g. brochures, website, newsletters, announcements,
memos, posters, etc.
• Tutor when necessary and possible.
• Represent the UWSC across the University and maintain professional
relationships with related offices, such as Disability Resource Center,
International Student Services, and the Hendrix Health and Counseling Center.
• Maintain an atmosphere in the UWSC conducive to thoughtful writing and
discussion of writing.
• Conduct regular UWSC student tutor training meetings.
• Manage the UWSC payroll and budget.
Facilitation of Writing Instruction
• Assist in the coordination of Writing Intensive courses university-wide.
• Consult individually with faculty on developing writing enriched and writing
intensive courses, providing supporting materials when possible.
• Plan and conduct regular discussion forums on writing-related topics,
such as effective assignment design and effective grading.
• Plan and conduct annual workshops and brown-bag seminars to help faculty
teach writing effectively.
• Plan and conduct other writing-related related activities, such as individual departmental/program faculty training sessions on adding writing to courses.
• Serve on other writing instruction-related committees
• Handle publicity related to writing instruction.
• Coordinate assessment of written communication
competencies.
• Work with Faculty Development on writing instruction-related programming.
• Work with the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) Coordinating Committee.
• Serve on the University Assessment Committee
The University Writing Director faculty position includes 15 credits of reassignment per academic year, plus 5 Extra Duty Days.

1. Knowledge of/Training in composition theory and instruction
2. Demonstrated ability to teach adult learners
3. Effective cross-disciplinary communication skills
4. Demonstrated ability to manage and coordinate cross-disciplinary groups/committees/programs/departments
5. Commitment to/Experience with faculty development
6. Knowledge of and Commitment to Program Assessment
7. Budget management skills
The position will report to the Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and carries a 3-year term.
