MSUM offers archaeology tour of the Regional Science Center

September 20 | 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. | Regional Science Center

MSU Moorhead’s Department of Anthropology and Earth Science is offering a tour of archaeology of the Regional Science Center on Sunday, Sept. 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The tour is being hosted in association with Minnesota Archaeology Week, an annual event to celebrate the archaeological understanding of Minnesota’s past.

Open to the public, the tour will explore the archeological history and significance of the Regional Science Center, including the discovery this summer of bison bones and dart tips left behind by native people that hunted there 500 to 8,000 years ago. Professor George Holley and three MSUM undergraduate students uncovered these artifacts in early August.

“These discoveries represent a major breakthrough in our understanding of the Red River valley past,” Holley said. “The Science Center contains a unique setting of timber, water, stone and environmental habitats, where the Buffalo River met the expansive prairie of the Red River Valley, that was a focal point for native peoples of the region. We expect to find evidence for the entirety of the past, a perspective that is not available in any other area in the region.”

During the tour, archaeologists and students will be placed throughout the center to explain the archaeological significance of the site and to answer any questions.
