Updates on OS X 10.10 “Yosemite”

Last October, Apple released OS X 10.10 “Yosemite” via the Mac App Store. As previously communicated, the MSUM Information Technology department has been performing tests to confirm the supported services work as designed. Since October, Apple has released several updates to remediate issues that we discovered through our tests. Finally, we have SUCCESS!! with the most recent updates! As a result, we are recommending the operating system upgrade to Yosemite for those that need it. However, we also recommend that the MSUM IT Staff perform the upgrade for you.

For those that are currently running 10.9 Mavericks you are not required to update. Mavericks is still being updated with current security patches and has no known issues with our systems.

Coming this fall….Apple will be releasing 10.11 “El Capitan”. As with Yosemite, the MSUM IT department is recommending that you hold off on that upgrade as well. The MSUM IT staff will test the upgrade to verify any issues with the supported services at MSUM.

Can I perform the upgrade myself? Likely, you can execute the update on your own. We’ve had several instances where the upgrade didn’t perform as expected and the computer operating system needed to be reinstalled. We encourage you to contact the MSUM IT Helpdesk and we will create a support ticket to schedule your upgrade with you.

What if I don’t know how to upgrade? Contact the MSUM IT Helpdesk and we will create a support ticket for you to get the upgrade scheduled.

What changes are in the new operating system? This link has the details to the changes within the operating system. http://www.apple.com/osx/

Do I have to upgrade? No. Typically, software updates will require an update to the operating system. If your system is not experiencing any software issues, we recommend that you do not update the operating system.
