Suzzanne Kelley to present at two Oklahoma events

Suzzanne Kelley, PhD, New Rivers Press managing editor and co-director, is invited by Phi Alpha Theta, University of Central Oklahoma’s history honor society, to be their guest lecturer on the topic, “Research and Rhetoric: Transforming Your Notes into Publications.” She brings to the conversation her own experiences as a researcher and writer of the Great Plains region, New Zealand, and Australia, and her expertise as an editor and publisher in fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Her presentation will take place on March 14 at the UCO campus.

On Saturday, March 15, Kelley will discuss the impact of the Harvey House phenomenon in matters of tourism and the advancement of opportunities for women, particularly in Oklahoma. Her presentation follows the film debut of the documentary, “The Harvey Girls: Opportunity Bound.” This event is one of a series taking place across the nation. More details about “Opportunity Bound” can be found at www.harveygirlsdocumentary.com.

Kelley has published essays on this topic in the Encyclopedia of Immigration and Migration in the American West and the Encyclopedia of Oklahoma History and Culture. She was awarded second prize in the 2002 Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conference Graduate Division for her paper on Fred Harvey, “Legacy of Conquest vs Victory of Decorum.”
