Dave Wallace memorial tournament nets $2,688 for endowed ceramics scholarship
Fifty-six golfers and a drop-by following of friends raised $2,688 for the Dave Wallace Memorial Ceramics Scholarship earlier this summer at Village Green Golf Course in Moorhead.
It’s the first in what hopes to be an annual golf tournament aimed at raising at least $10,000 for Wally’s endowed scholarship. (Wally would snort at the juxtaposition of “Wally” and “endowed” in the same sentence.)
As you know, Dave “Wally” Wallace was a well-known local artist who graduated from MSUM, spent part of his career as a full-time potter, and for the last 20 years served as the university’s art director.
An avid golfer, Wally played as much of the game as he could through a long and difficult battle with an aggressive form of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. He died May 2 at Sanford Hospital, surrounded by his family.
Thanks go to Russ Nelson, head professional at Village Green, who contributed $170 in golf merchandise certificates to tournament players. A number of other friends contributed items as well, including Wade Stubson of Eventide and Rick Johnson of Bremer Insurance.
The tournament trophy is on permanent display at Village Green pro shop. Dwight Williams is the guy who created the wood sculpture encasing the trophy. Its centerpiece is one of Wally’s ceramic creations that John Tandberg bought at his gallery outlet, Underbrush Gallery in Fargo.
