Study Abroad in Galapagos, Ecuador

Spring Break 2011

Join Professor Cecilia Mafla-Bustamante, Department of Languages and Cultures, as she leads a Spring Break Tour to the Galapagos Islands, UNESCO World Heritage Site, during Spring Break 2011. The group will leave on Friday, March 11th, and return on Sunday, March 20th. Participants will visit the colonial city center in Quito, also World Heritage site, one of the most traditional Indian markets of Latin America, Otavalo, and will visit the islands Santa Cruz, Seymour North, Floreana, and Isabela.

Academic Program

The objective of this Studies Abroad Program is to introduce students to the culture and geography of Ecuador, and give them the opportunity to see and appreciate Colonial Quito, an Indian market, and the flora and fauna of the Galapagos Island.  Although the guides will speak English, the student will certainly have the opportunity to practice Spanish with the Ecuadorian people.  Students will be required to sign up for a 2 credit course, Spanish 390.  Dr. Mafla will meet with the students once a week for nine weeks before the trip, and once after the trip.  The students are required to write a paper after returning from Ecuador.  More information about the class will be given in the class syllabus.  Credits earned in this course may be applied towards a Spanish major or minor.

Applications and Deadlines

The application deadline is November 1, 2010. The program is limited to 15 participants on a first-come-first-served basis. The applicants should have a minimum of 2.5 GPA and be in good academic and disciplinary standing. Please come to the information meeting on Thursday, Oct. 21, 5:00-6:30 pm. in MA274
