Oxford Prof Allan Chapman lectures on Wednesday
Dr. Allan Chapman from Oxford University’s Wadham College presents his annual public lecture on “From Moon Men to Black Holes: How 400 years of the telescope has re-shaped our sense of reality” at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 23 in MSUM’s Science Lab 104. Refreshments will follow in the SL atrium.
Chapman, a social historian and member of the Royal Astronomical Society Club, frequently appears on British television specials about the history of astronomy and science.
His latest book, “England’s Leonardo: Robert Hooke & the 17th Century Scientific Revolution,” was published recently by the Institute of Physics Publishing, Bristol & Philadelphia.
A specialist in the history of early medicine, he’s been a Hastings Memorial Lecturer at the University of Minnesota Medical School.
During his visit to campus, Chapman will talk to students interested in studying in Oxford next year under MSUM’s Eurospring program, now in its 30th year. His information sessions will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 10 a.m. in Bridges Hall 269 and again Thursday, Sept. 24 at 3 p.m. in Bridges Hall 263.
In addition, a reunion reception of past Eurospring participants will be held Thursday, Sept. 24 from 5-9 p.m. at Usher’s Pub in Moorhead.

Chapman will also lecture at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23 to doctors at MeritCare Hospitals on “Charles Darwin and the Surgeons: Medical Men and the Theory of Evolution.”
