Eurospring Exhibit opens Tuesday

EUROSPRING 2009: SCENES ALONG THE JOURNEY, a photo exhibit, will open on Tuesday, September 15, in Livingston Lord Library’s circulation lobby.

The photographs were taken by students who participated in MSUM’s Eurospring study abroad program, March 17-May 12. 2009. The free exhibit will continue through October 15 and is available for viewing during regular library hours. The exhibit also celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Eurospring program.

Eurospring is an eight-week travel and study program to Oxford, England, and to several continental centers. The 2009 group traveled to Paris and Avignon-Arles, France; Cavi di Lavagna, Pisa, Rome, Siena, Florence, and Venice, Italy; Salzburg, Austria; Weimar, Germany and Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Most of the images in the exhibit were taken by students during their visits to these cities, as well as to various sites around Oxford and England.

In the statement that introduces the exhibit, Dr. Thom Tammaro, Professor of English and Director of the Eurospring 2009 program, writes that, “Although a few students were studying photography as part of their Art & Graphic Design and Mass Communications majors back at MSUM, the photos in this exhibit were not taken by students of photography or professional photographers. The word amateur in its original French means ‘one who has a taste for something’; and hidden in the word amateur you also glimpse a form of the Latin amare, ‘to love’ and amator, ‘lover.’ Think of these photographs, then, taken by Eurospring 2009 students, as witness to the students’ taste for something greater and larger than themselves; think of the photographs as testimony to their desire to experience the new and unknown, and to remember and share those life-changing moments with others. For surely they will tell you if you asked them, Eurospring 2009 changed their lives irrevocably.”

2009 marks the 30th anniversary of Eurospring. On September 23-24, Dr. Allan Chapman, Oxford professor and main lecturer for the program for more than twenty-five years, will be on campus to recruit students for the next spring’s program and deliver his annual public lecture.
