MSUM STUDENTS RECEIVE MORE JOURNALISM AWARDS
Five MSUM students collected 10 Eric Sevareid Awards from the Northwest Broadcast News Association (NBNA), and horizonlines.org, an online magazine produced under the direction of Reggie Radniecki, assistant professor of mass communications, received an award of merit for its Website.
MSUM collected more awards in the student market categories than any other college, 11, ahead of University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (10) and Loras College, (9).
The following students received awards:
- Nathan Matson, a junior from Twin Valley, received three 1st place awards in the radio category for pieces produced for Prairie Public Radio: “Ethanol Plant Pt. 1” for audio; “Ethanol Plant Pt. 1 & 2” for hard feature; and “Ethanol Bus” for soft feature.
- Whitney Hay, a senior from Ray, N.D., received two awards of merit, one for television general reporting for “Camp Wilderness” for KVRR-TV and one for hard feature, “Student in the Guard,” for MSUM’s Campus News program.
- Todd Kurtz, a senior from Aberdeen, S.D., received an award of merit for “Dodge for Cancer” for Campus News.
- Michael Quinn, a 2008 graduate from Sisseton, S.D., received two 1st place awards for “Facebook Phenomenon” for Campus News in the categories of broadcast writing and soft feature; and a 1st place award for the hard feature “Guns on Campus.”
- Nathan Aamodt, a 2008 graduate from Horace, N.D., received an award of merit for “Campus News Sportscast” in the sportscast/program category.
The Campus News program is directed by Aaron Quanbeck, assistant professor of mass communications.
The NBNA is an organization, chartered in 1949, of radio and television journalists working in the six-state Upper Midwest region including Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. The Eric Sevareid Awards includes 18 categories for radio and television, with markets divided into large, medium, small and student categories. NBNA’s mission is to serve and improve the broadcast industry through educational and professional programs.
