MSUM Enrollment Increases for 2nd Straight Year

The official Fall Semester enrollment figures for Minnesota State University Moorhead show an overall increase led by gains in new entering freshman and graduate students. Overall total headcount for undergraduate and graduate students is up 1.67 percent driven by a 21 percent increase in graduate students and a 2.5 percent increase in new entering freshman. Fall Semester headcount is 6,019, with 5,147 undergraduate and 872 graduate students. The official numbers are calculated after 30 class days and are used for standardized reporting purposes.  Read the rest of this entry →

What’s happening in Marketing

Each year, the Marketing Communications team develops a holiday greeting from the university to faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends of MSUM. What had once been a traditional greeting card has evolved into a short video utilizing the talents of staff and our student workers who are often studying film, marketing, ad/PR or similar academic disciplines.

This year, Marketing interns Sara Erickson (broadcast journalism), Azmi Murtaza (advertising and PR), Dillan Schmiedt (film production), Leah Schmitt (advertising and PR), and Mandi Wahl (graphic design), with help from Music faculty member Allen Carter and Entertainment Industries and Technology faculty member Ryan Jackson, are working on an ambitious greeting in production now. Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM) presents its third Sports Communication Conference, “Bold North Meets MSUM,” on Wednesday, October 18, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Comstock Memorial Union on campus. The conference, open to all area high school and college students, explores the fastest growing careers in sports. Dr. Hest presents at Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Conference

Dr. Theresa Hest, Communication Studies Professor from the School of Communication and Journalism, presented at the 2017 Conference of the Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota. The Conference was held in St. Cloud on September 15-16. Dr. Hest presented research on “What we carry with us: Memorable family messages that become part of our compass as we navigate transition, challenge, and change throughout life.”

Holtan wins two national writing awards

Merrie Sue Holtan, School of Communication and Journalism, won two national writing awards at the National Federation of Press Women (NFPW) conference in Birmingham, Ala.

She won first place in Sports Writing and second in Home articles. NFPW also celebrated their 80 year anniversary.

Alumna to enter Handmaids of the Heart of Jesus as postulant

Melissa Haas ’15 (communication studies) is entering the Handmaids of the Heart of Jesus as a postulant on Aug. 27.

Haas is the third MSUM student to enter a religious vocation under the direction of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Moorhead, which offers room and board to students attending area higher education institutions.

MSUM alumnus Chad Nelson ’07 (mass communications), a photojournalist with KARE 11 in the Twin Cities, won two top honors in the 2017 National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) Video Best of Photojournalism awards, in what’s being called an “unprecedented sweep.”

Nelson was named both the Ernie Crisp News Photographer of the Year and Editor of the Year at a ceremony June 2.  Read the rest of this entry →

Campus News named national finalist in SPJ 2016 Mark of Excellence awards

Campus News was named a Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) 2016 Mark of Excellence national finalist in the Best All-Around Television Newscast category.

Campus News is a collaborative learning project where faculty and industry professionals mentor students to produce a weekly television program that airs on Prairie Public Television. MSUM’s Campus News is broadcast into the homes of more than a million people via Prairie Public Television. The 30-minute newscast includes local, regional and national stories, and is written, reported, photographed, edited, anchored and produced by students.

MSUM School of Communication & Journalism Dedicates Marcil Center for Innovative Journalism May 3

Minnesota State University Moorhead School of Communication and Journalism will dedicate its Marcil Center for Innovative Journalism Wednesday, May 3 at 1 p.m. in MacLean Hall 262.

Speakers will include MSUM President Anne Blackhurst; Interim Dean of Arts, Media & Communication Denise Gorsline; Forum Communications Company Chairman William “Bill” Marcil, Sr.; and Marcil Center student apprentices Derek Fletcher and Lexi Byler. Student scholarship winners will also be awarded.

The Marcil Center for Innovative Journalism is collaboration between Forum Communications and MSUM that enhances the university’s long-standing reputation for producing highly qualified reporters, photographers and other media professionals. It was established in 2013 with a $1 million gift from Forum Communications to support scholarships, student internships, student/faculty research, residencies by communications leaders and more.  Read the rest of this entry →

The Advocate wins nearly 40 journalism awards

The MSUM Advocate brought home 36 North Dakota Professional Communicators (NDPC) Awards recently.

The student-run Advocate took home first place for best publication, plus dozens of MSUM student journalists — mostly multimedia journalism majors — won individual awards.

The NDPC is the state affiliate of National Federation of Press Women, a national organization of communication professionals. The NDPC is made up of western Minnesota and North Dakota communication and journalism professionals.

The contest recognizes the best of student journalism work each year. The region includes universities in North Dakota and Minnesota.

The awards were presented to Advocate editor Kayleigh Omang at a banquet. Dr. Deneen Gilmour is The Advocate’s faculty adviser.  Read the rest of this entry →

Holtan wins awards at ND Professional Communicators state competition

Merrie Sue Holtan, Communication and Journalism, earned first place awards in sports writing and home writing in the North Dakota Professional Communicators’ state competition. She earned a second place in sports writing and an honorable mention in feature writing. The first place awards will move to the National Federation of Presswomen competition in Birmingham, Ala., this fall.

Campus News named best college newscast by Society of Professional Journalists for third straight year

For the third year in a row, the Society of Professional Journalists has named MSUM’s Campus News the winner in the student newscast category in its annual Mark of Excellence Region 6 Awards. In addition, Campus News students earned twelve individual awards in six different television categories, more than any other school in the region.

The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Mark of Excellence Awards for Region 6 includes colleges and universities in the states of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. First place winners in each category advance to the national round of judging.

The Program Director for Campus News, Aaron Quanbeck, said that having SPJ name Campus News as the best college newscast for the third straight year says a lot about the dedication of the students. “This award is hard enough to win once, much less three times in a row,” said Quanbeck, “and it takes students who are willing to put in the hard work and long hours to make that possible.”  Read the rest of this entry →

Campus News story on FM Autism Support Group airing Feb. 25

Campus News will be doing a story on the FM Autism Support Group that is run by Rachel Stotts from the SLHS department the collaboration with the MSUM students from the Speech/Language/Hearing Sciences program. The story will run on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 7:30 a.m. on Prairie Public television.
