The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Mark of Excellence Awards for Region 6 includes colleges and universities in the states of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. First place winners in each category advance to the national round of judging.
Campus News also took first place in the morning newscast category in its annual Eric Sevareid Awards. The Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association (MBJA) Eric Sevareid Awards covers the six-state region of Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Nebraska. MSUM students also earned 10 individual awards, including first place in podcasting and the television categories of hard feature, soft feature, sports reporting, DEI reporting, weather feature, and videojournalism.
Campus News students also took home Crystal Pillars in the Upper Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences annual Student Production Awards. The NATAS Upper Midwest Chapter includes the five-state region of Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Iowa.
The awards were presented at the Midwest Journalism Conference, recently held in St. Paul, MN. Program Director for Campus News, Dr. Aaron Quanbeck, said the recognition highlights the dedication students bring to their work. “Students invest many hours each week gathering video and interviews for their stories, writing scripts, and editing their projects. These awards acknowledge their commitment to producing high-quality journalism,” Quanbeck said.
Campus News airs on Prairie Public Television at 8:30 AM during the spring semester and has been broadcast since the early 1980s. Archived newscasts and stories are available on the Campus News Youtube channel at www.youtube.com/MSUMCampusNews.
