Yesterday, President Anne Blackhurst and Vice President for Finance and Administration Jean Hollaar testified to the House Higher Education and Career Readiness Policy and Finance Committee on behalf of the Minnesota State budget request. You can watch their testimony online. Their testimony begins approximately 13 minutes into the video.

Today, President Blackhurst and VP Hollaar will testify to the Senate Higher Education Finance and Policy Committee at 1 p.m.

Wenger, Kruse celebrate 45 years of service to MSUM

Plans for Downtown Moorhead organization underway

The Downtown Moorhead project is a collective, collaborative effort to envision and realize a new, 21st century downtown neighborhood for Moorhead.

The Downtown Moorhead project is led by a steering group made up of the presidents of Moorhead’s three colleges/university (Concordia College, M State, and Minnesota State University Moorhead) and several business and civic leaders in the community. The steering group has led the efforts to secure pledges from the Moorhead business community to support an initial three-year startup of a downtown-focused organization in Moorhead. There are currently 28 investors with combined commitments nearing half a million dollars over the next three years.  Read the rest of this entry →

President Blackhurst to sponsor MSUM student marathon runners

The Fargo Marathon is Saturday, May 20, 2017 and we are excited that the course includes the MSUM campus.

President Anne Blackhurst, a veteran marathon runner, will again reimburse up to 10 marathon registrations for MSUM students.

Sponsorships are for the full marathon, 2-person relay, and 4-person relay only.

For reimbursement, send your marathon registration confirmation, showing full payment, to Kathy Abraham,, by Feb. 28, 2017.

In light of the recent Executive Order affecting international students, faculty, and staff from specified countries, I am writing to reaffirm MSUM’s commitment to creating and maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for all.

Minnesota State University Moorhead values the many contributions of our international community members and scholars. We welcome and support students without regard to nationality or religion and will continue to admit students in accordance with our nondiscrimination policy. Once students are admitted, MSUM is committed to fostering an environment in which all students can succeed.

As a reminder, MSUM safeguards individual privacy and does not release private information, including information about national origin or immigration status.

Any member of the campus community who has questions or concerns about the Executive Order and its implications can contact Janet Hohenstein, Director of International Student Services, at or 218.477.2956. University administrators are monitoring the status of the Executive Order and its interpretation and will provide updates to the campus community as appropriate.

MSUM campus hosts community block party to kick of their homecoming, WDAY: “Moorhead is bursting with Dragon pride this week. Monday night, students, faculty and families rallied at a community block party for MSUM’s Homecoming.”

Roers/Keller William put on annual Chili Feed to raise money for United Way, WDAY: “It was the perfect day for a bowl of steamin’ hot chili. More than 900 people bellied up for the annual Chili Feed for United Way put on by Roers/Keller Williams. Along with a free-will donation, people could try 50 different types of chili made by everyone from the Killbourne Group to MSUM President Blackhurst.”

MSUM celebrates Professor Conteh and his retirement, WDAY: “An MSUM icon is being honored tonight for his contributions to higher education. Andrew Conteh has been teaching international relations and law at the university for more than 30 years.”

‘Printober’ at Plains celebrates art of printmaking, InForum: “The Plains Art Museum has stamped this month as Printober, with events and workshops dedicated to the art and education of printmaking.”

Gibson ties school record, leads Dragons to homecoming victory, InForum: “Minnesota State Moorhead wide receiver Damon Gibson was the model of scoring efficiency Saturday night, Oct. 8, at Alex Nemzek Stadium. Gibson caught four passes and all went for touchdowns. His performance vaulted the Dragons to a 41-12 homecoming victory against Minnesota-Crookston in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference football at Scheels Field.”

Dragons induct 11 individuals, one team into sports hall of fame, InForum: “Minnesota State Moorhead is inducting 11 individuals and one team into its sports hall of fame.”

Small in stature, Dragons receiver Ambrose makes big impact, InForum: “Minnesota State Moorhead quarterback Jake Hodge was in the head coach’s office earlier this week when he tossed a playful verbal jab at wide receiver Cory Ambrose.”

Impact of immigration topic of MSUM lecture, InForum: :”Oscar Flores, a professor of economics at Minnesota State University Moorhead, will discuss the “Economic Impact of Immigration on the American Economy” during a lecture at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10 at King Hall, Room 110, on the MSUM campus.”

MSUM Wraps Up Homecoming Week With a Parade, KVRR: “MSUM is ending their eventful Homecoming Week with a parade. Students, faculty and staff came out to show their Dragon Pride as they joined the Homecoming Parade.”

Serving up Homecoming Spirit at MSUM’s “Ice Cream Palooza”, KVRR: “They served up free ice cream to students and a few professors got a pie in the face this afternoon at MSUM. The “Ice Cream Palooza” was all a part of homecoming week and put on by all the homecoming court nominees.”

MSUM Enrollment Up Based on 10th Day Numbers

Significant Gains in Graduate, International and New Freshmen 

Preliminary 10th day figures released this week show Minnesota State University Moorhead’s enrollment for new entering graduate students is up 31.7%, new entering domestic freshmen is up 21.8%, and new entering international students is up 10.9%. Overall total headcount for undergraduate and graduate students is up 1.5% while new entering transfer students is down 1.6%.  Read the rest of this entry →

MSUM Working Through National Tragedies

President Anne Blackhurst recently sent an email to the campus community, reminding students, faculty and staff that MSUM stands in solidarity with those most affected by the fatal shootings in Orlando, Baton Rouge, Falcon Heights and Dallas.

Gov. Dayton Visits Moorhead, Urges Legislature to Finish Work, Invest in Better Minnesota

Gov. Mark Dayton will be visiting Moorhead and Worthington today, calling on legislators to finish their work and make critical investments in a Better Minnesota.

Dayton will visit Minnesota State University Moorhead and the Lewis and Clark water project in Worthington, urging legislators to compromise on terms for a Special Session. Since June 1, 2016, Dayton has been calling on legislative leaders to compromise on needed investments in higher education, job creation, and public safety. Essential investments in Moorhead and Worthington area projects were among many left unfinished during this year’s Regular Session.
