Learn about sun dogs, halos and more at Jan. 21 physics seminar

Matt Craig, MSUM Department of Physics & Astronomy, will talk about “Upside-down Rainbows, Sun Dogs and Halos: Optical Phenomenon Caused by Ice Crystals” at a free seminar Friday, January 21 from 2:30-3:20 p.m. in Hagen Hall room 325. Ice crystals in the atmosphere cause a much wider variety of optical effects than water droplets. Water droplets cause rainbows, but ice […]

Juan Cabanela has article accepted for publication

An article co-authored by Juan Cabanela, Physics and Astronomy, has been accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal. As part of a four-year project, Cabanela and his collaborators obtained detailed spectra for over 4,000 stars, allowing them to measure their motions and chemical compositions. Analysis of the motions and positions of these stars has revealed that as the bar-shaped core […]

Physics/Astronomy seminar on wind farm selection Nov. 19

The Physics and Astronomy Seminar Series presents a senior project talk by Devin Kasper on “MCP-Based Wind Farm Site Selection Using Variance Ratio Algorithm” at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19 in Hagen Hall 325. Wind companies, private investors, etc. need the ability to predict wind speed at a given location with limited wind speed data. The Measure-Correlate-Predict (MCP) method is one […]
