Rachel Childers, 2nd horn with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, joins flutist Tiana Grise, Music, for a Convocation of wind chamber music Friday, April 21, at 3 p.m. in Fox Recital Hall in the Roland Dille Center for the Arts. Other performers are Sam Childers, bassoon; Stephanie Carlson, oboe; Cassie Keogh, clarinet; and Stephen Sulich, piano. The performance is free and open to the public.

Dr. Carter Releases Second Progressive Big Band Jazz CD

Dr. Allen Carter, Professor of Music, has just released his second CD of progressive big band jazz. “Time On My Hands” was recorded in late July in Los Angeles with some of the west coast’s finest jazz and studio musicians. Two MSUM students, Kathryn Malaktaris and Matthew Tinjum were able to accompany Dr. Carter and assist on the session with the help of a Dille Grant awarded by the university.

An Evening of Dance

The Theatre Department presents “An Evening of Dance” on Tuesday, May 3, at 7:30 p.m. in Hansen Theatre. This annual showcase features  the work of MSUM student dancers and choreographers, and includes ballet, hip-hop, modern, lyrical, musical theatre styles and tap.

Kenyon Williams to present clinics at Minnesota Day of Percussion

VaryingDegreesFriendly - Version 3Dr. Kenyon Williams, School of Performing Arts, is presenting at three separate clinics at the Minnesota Day of Percussion on Saturday, Jan. 9. The Minnesota Day of Percussion is the largest gathering of percussionists in the state, attracting over 800 middle school, high school, college, and professional percussionists from across the state for a full day of clinics, masterclasses, and performances featuring artists from across the country. Williams will present clinics on performing percussion in orchestral, Afro-Cuban, and acoustic pop/worship music settings.

“Prairie Musicians – Behind the Scenes” featuring Lines&Notes July 24

Prairie Public Television’s local series “Prairie Musicians – Behind the Scenes,” features Lines&Notes, a duo created by MSUM faculty members Terrie Manno, music, and Kevin Zepper, English. The duo performs Manno’s musical compositions while Zepper reads his poetry. The full show airs Friday, July 24, at 9:30 p.m. on Prairie Public, and will later air on YouTube.

The duo also performed at the Prairie Region Teacher Training Institute in June at Concordia College. The training sessions focused on teaching and learning strategies, and were sponsored by Prairie Public.

Dr. Terrie Manno and the Manno-Dean Piano Duo perform to standing-room-only crowd in Budapest, Hungary

Dr. Terrie Manno, SPA pianist, and her partner Michael Dean gave a solo and duet recital at the historic Franz Liszt Academy Museum in Budapest, Hungary, on June 6, 2015. They performed works by Franz Schubert, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Ottorino Respighi, and Vincent d’Indy. The audience requested two encores and the piano duo complied with works by Scott Joplin and Johannes Brahms.

Jazz Studies alumnus Andy Stermer awarded $10,000 graduate award

Andy Stermer, a graduate of MSUM in the Jazz Studies program, has been awarded a $10,000.00 Presser graduate award in the Master of Music in Jazz Writing program at the University of Miami. He plans to use the award to bring in guest artists he knows from Uruguay to perform music he’s writing that will comprise an entire concert by the University of Miami Concert Jazz Band; an opportunity not commonly given to students even at the graduate level.
