Kyja Kristjansson-Nelson’s Sveit to exhibit at Wisconsin film festival

Kyja Kristjansson-Nelson’s experimental documentary, Sveit, will be exhibited at the 2010 Wisconsin Film Festival. Sveit will screen at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 17 at Madison’s Play Circle Theatre. A geneography of memory and place, Sveit was shot in a rural village on the north coast of Iceland. The filmmaker traces her family’s history and emigration from Iceland to the United States, while unpacking memories and stories of her grandfather’s experience as a New American in North Dakota. Kristjansson-Nelson’s Sveit premieres at Walker Art Center

Kyja Kristjansson-Nelson’s experimental documentary, Sveit, will premiere at the Walker Art Center as part of the Women with Vision 2010 International Film Festival. Sveit will screen daily from noon during gallery hours March 2 through March 31. A geneography of memory and place, Sveit was shot in a rural village on the north coast of Iceland. The filmmaker traces her family’s history and emigration from Iceland to the United States, while unpacking memories and stories of her grandfather’s experience as a New American in North Dakota. Meanwhile, Kristjansson negotiates the relationship between landscape, language, mythology and ritual with the help of the local first through fourth grade Icelandic children. Sveit was funded in part by the Bush Foundation, the Corporation of Yaddo, the Fulbright Association, and Skaftfell Menningarmidstod. Click headline for more information.

Sept. 28 Book Talk features “Learner-Centered Teaching” by Maryellen Weimer

As a follow up to Maryellen Weimer’s August Faculty Development kick-off event presentation, three faculty members will share their thinking about ideas contained in her Jossey-Bass publication, “Learner-Centered Teaching: Five Key Changes to Practice” on Monday, Sept. 28 from 11:30 am-12:30 pm in CMU 203. Presenters Mary Dosch, School for Teaching and Learning; Kyja Kristjansson- Nelson, Film Studies; and Steve Bolduc, Economics, have been trying her ideas in their classrooms and will report on their findings.
