Higher Learning Commission open forum

MSUM is preparing for its 10-year reaffirmation of accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). HLC reviewers will visit April 23-25, 2017 and will meet with students, faculty, and staff.

Public Notice for Community Comment

Minnesota State University Moorhead is seeking comments from the public about the University in preparation for its periodic evaluation by its regional accreditation agency. The University will host a visit April 23-25, 2017, with a team representing the Higher Learning Commission. Minnesota State University Moorhead has been accredited by HLC since 1916. MSUM’s HLC website, mnstate.edu/hlc, is published and will be a work in progress as we populate it with information to help prepare for the upcoming Spring visit.

Currently, the site lists and explains the Criteria for Accreditation, the HLC Steering Committee membership, a Public Comment section, as well as a timeline that is soon to be populated with open forums and other events.

What are the current criteria for re-accreditation?

MSUM’s report will address the following five criteria:

  1. Mission: The institution’s mission is clear and articulated publicly; it guides the institution’s operations.
  2. Integrity: Ethical and Responsible Conduct: The institution acts with integrity; its conduct is ethical and responsible.
  3. Teaching and Learning: Quality, Resources, and Support: The institution provides high quality education, wherever and however its offerings are delivered.
  4. Teaching and Learning: Evaluation and Improvement: The institution demonstrates responsibility for the quality of its educational programs, learning environments, and support services, and it evaluates their effectiveness for student learning through processes designed to promote continuous improvement.
  5. Resources, Planning, and Institutional Effectiveness: The institution’s resources, structures, and processes are sufficient to fulfill its mission, improve the quality of its educational offerings, and respond to future challenges and opportunities. The institution plans for the future.

You may be asked to meet with the team while they are here, so please keep your schedule open during those days. We recommend that you know:

  • MSUM’s mission;
  • How your department/office and its division engage in planning; and
  • How your program assesses student learning, what it has learned through assessment, and what changes have been made as a result of assessment.

Accreditation ensures the quality and integrity of MSUM’s programs and services, allows students to transfer credits to other accredited institutions, and enables students to obtain financial aid and veteran’s services; accreditation also allows MSUM to participate in federally funded projects and grants and guarantees MSUM’s ability to recruit and retain quality faculty and staff.  Read the rest of this entry →

The University has an important visit from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) scheduled for April 23-25, 2017. This is to reaffirm our accreditation status.
