Death of MSUM student Fanuel Shewarega Asrat

We are saddened to report that the death of MSUM student Fanuel Shewarega Asrat was recently confirmed. Fanuel died Thursday, June 29 after swimming with friends in the Red River. Fanuel, a native of Ethiopia, was a senior majoring in Economics. He will be missed by many friends and family members. 

MSUM is following established protocols for the death of a student that includes communications with family, coordination between campuses office, supporting our students, and informing faculty teaching the student’s classes. Faculty, staff and students with questions may direct them to the Division of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs, 218-477-2171. They may also contact Hendrix Clinic & Counseling Center at 218-477-2630 if they wish to speak with a counselor.

We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Fanuel Shewarega Asrat.

MSUM student reported missing

An MSUM student is missing after swimming Thursday morning with friends in the Red River. Public safety workers are continuing their search for Fanuel Shewarega Asrat, a senior majoring in Economics.

Student Affairs personnel are reaching out to Asrat’s family. MSUM faculty, staff or students may contact the Division of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs at 218-477-2171 with general questions, or the Hendrix Clinic & Counseling Center at 218-477-2630 if they wish to speak with a counselor.
