Economic Society members, faculty advisors present workshop at 2017 Expanding Your Horizons Conference

MSUM Economic Society members (Moyinoluwa Abiola, Alexander Johnson, Aleena Kearns, Josh Noennig, Rahil Pereira, and McKenna Togstad) and co-advisors Drs. T. J. Hansen and Gregory Stutes presented the workshop, “Operation Economics,” as part of the Expanding Your Horizons Conference on April 8. This conference invites young women in the seventh, eighth, and ninth grades in Minnesota and North Dakota to a day of career exploration workshops focused on the development of mathematical and critical thinking skills. In the “Operation Economics” workshop, young women learned about the impact of specialization on international trade by participating in a trading simulation with members of the Economic Society.

Join the Economic Society in donating unwanted cellphones

During the month of February, the Economic Society is hosting a phone drive for the Rape and Abuse Crisis Center in support of preventing Rape and Abuse of all types. Donate your unwanted cellphones, cellphone accessories, and chargers at one of our donation boxes across campus. All donations by the Economic Society and Soroptimists International of Moorhead will go to the Rape and Abuse Crisis Center clients to either be used as quick access to 911 or to be sold to raise funds for their needs.

Economic Society to attend Minnesota State Paralegal Association Moorhead event

The Economic Society has been invited by the Minnesota State Paralegal Association Moorhead to attend their Guest Speaker Event on November 12th from 6:00pm to 7:00pm in CMU 101. They will be hosting Criminal Defense Attorney Lindsey Haugen and his Paralegal from the Haugen and Moeckel law firm along with Paralegal Specialist Deb Wilson and United States Attorney Chris Myers from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. They will ask the speakers to share information about their career background, daily tasks, team interaction, and career advice. There also will alot time for you to ask any other questions.

Economic Society service project a success

A message from the MSUM Economic Society:

The MSUM Economic Society would like to thank the MSUM community for participating in the collection of used cell phones and accessories for our service project.

We collected 73 phones and many accessories, improving our count from last year by over 20 phones. As advertised earlier, we are partnering with the Soroptimist International of Moorhead and donations will be given to clients of the Rape and Abuse Crisis Center in Fargo-Moorhead.

Thank you for all who participated and we hope to see more people participate in Economic Society events such as these in the near future.

Economics Department involved in Winter Institute

Economics faculty member, Dr. Gregory Stutes, and six members of the Economic Society student organization (Fanuel Asrat, Kofi Boadu, Cody Brandt, Jed Eix, Jasmin Lam, and Taylor Rodriguez) attended the 52nd Winter Institute in St. Cloud February 12-13. Economic Society seeking used cell phones and accessories

The Economic Society is partnering with the Soroptimist International of Moorhead to collect used cell phones and accessories (chargers, cases, etc.) for clients of the Rape and Abuse Crisis Center in Fargo-Moorhead. Any donated phones in working condition are reset to call 911 only. Phones which are not in working condition are welcomed as the parts will go toward purchasing additional phones. Donations will be collected in boxes in the following locations: MacLean 380 (Economics Department Office), CMU (close to US Bank ATM), Langseth Hall (1st Floor close to recycle boxes), Center for the Arts (Student Lounge), Residence and Housing Office (Ballard), and Center for Business (1st Floor close to recycle boxes).
