Fuego Tropical to perform for 2,500 school children

MSUM’s Fuego Tropical World Music and Percussion Ensemble will present their annual “World Music Celebrations” educational performance presentation for over 2,500 school children this coming Monday and Tuesday in Hansen Auditorium. Directed by Dr. Kenyon Williams, the ensemble shares the music of the world in a lively interactive musical format with children from every elementary school in the Red River Valley by partnering with the Fargo Moorhead Learning Bank, a not-for-profit organization that promotes the arts in schools. Their five 45-minute long presentations will take place on Monday at 9:10 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., followed by two more performances on Tuesday at 9:10 and 10:30 a.m.  Read the rest of this entry →

Varying Degrees Percussion Trio to Perform at MSUM

The Varying Degrees Percussion Trio will present a performance in Weld Hall on Sunday, Oct. 8 at 7:30 p.m. Consisting of MSUM percussion alumni and faculty (Dr. Lucas Bernier, Tom Christianson, and Dr. Kenyon Williams), the trio will perform a wide range of works highlighting music from jazz fusion to Caribbean calypso, works for percussion theatre, and even a composition featuring just the “music” of tables! Percussion professor begins trio performances

Dr. Kenyon Williams, Professor of Percussion at MSUM, performed Thursday evening at the Fergus Falls “Concert in the Park” series along with members of the Varying Degrees Trio: MSUM percussion alumni Tom Christianson and Lucas Bernier. The trio received a Jade Presents grant from the Arts Partnership to present a variety of performances throughout the Red River Valley area this fall. Aside from their performance in Fergus Falls, the trio will also perform in Bismarck, Jamestown, Fargo, and Detroit Lakes as in a variety of Performing Arts events, including a performance on the campus of MSUM on Sunday, Oct. 8 at 7:30 p.m.

Dr. Kenyon Williams to Perform at SEAMUS

Dr. Kenyon Williams, Professor of Music, will perform this Friday at the Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the United States (SEAMUS) National Conference in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Dr. Williams will be performing a composition he commissioned in 2011 from New York composer Cort Lippe, “Duo for Tenor Steel Pan and Computer.” The work will be one of many recent and world premier compositions to be performed throughout the three day festival featuring performing artists and composers from around the world.

Dr. Monte Grisé and Dr. Kenyon Williams will perform this Sunday for the Fargo Moorhead Symphony’s Chamber Concert event, “April Foolin’ With PDQ Bach.” This musical-comedy concert is guaranteed to leave you laughing while enjoying the antics of the “Weird Al” of classical music, PDQ Bach. The concert will feature music such as PDQ’s infamous “Schleptet,” “Organ Prelude: Agnus Dei et Ave Maria” and “Largo alla Fargo” (because parts of it sound like a woodchipper). Dr. Kenyon Williams, Professor of Music at MSUM, will host the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony’s “April Foolin’ with PDQ Bach” chamber music concert this coming Sunday, March 26, at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church (in downtown Fargo). The School of Performing Arts will host the 3rd annual Honors High School Percussion Ensemble this weekend under the direction of Dr. Kenyon Williams. Top high school students from throughout the FM region audition to receive placement within the ensemble. Dr. Kenyon Williams Elected to PAS Board of Advisors

Dr. Kenyon Williams, Professor of Music in the School of Performing Arts, was elected to the Board of Advisors of the Percussive Arts Society this past weekend at the PAS International Convention in Indianapolis, Ind. As a member of the Board, Dr. Williams will serve with a variety of percussion educators, performers, and product specialists to help guide the direction of the 6,000 member organization that features 50 chapters in the U.S. and 28 chapters abroad.
