Scheels donates $1 million toward new football field with artificial turf at MSUM

The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead

FARGO – Just as North Dakota State will soon have the Scheels Center, Minnesota State Moorhead will soon see a Scheels Field, the result of a $1 million donation announced Wednesday.

The donation is part of MSUM’s Laps for the Long Run campaign, which was announced last week as a fundraiser for merit-based student scholarships. The university’s new president, Anne Blackhurst, personally donated $50,000.
The $1 million donation, presented by Steve Scheel, CEO of Scheels, will not go toward scholarships, but to a new football field with artificial turf.

Construction is planned next summer following the 2014-15 school year so that it does not conflict with student activities, said football coach Steve Laqua. Read the rest of this entry →

Scheels supports MSUM’s Laps for the Long Run with $1 million pledge

Posted on August 28, 2014

A fundraising challenge at Minnesota State University Moorhead has attracted its first major gift with a $1 million pledge from Scheels. The challenge, Laps for the Long Run, was announced Aug. 20 as an event in honor of the inauguration of MSUM Pres. Anne Blackhurst.  Blackhurst will run 12.5 miles, or 50 laps, around the Ron Masanz track at Nemzek Fieldhouse and has personally pledged $1,000 per lap, or $50,000, to start the challenge.

Yesterday, Steve Scheel, CEO of Scheels, accepted the challenge by pledging $20,000 per lap for every lap up to 50 that Blackhurst runs during the Homecoming Week event.

“SCHEELS has been a good partner with NDSU and Concordia over the years and we look forward to partnering with MSUM and President Blackhurst, to help MSUM become a stronger player in our community of Fargo-Moorhead,” said Steve Scheel. Read the rest of this entry →

Blackhurst presidency off and running

Posted on August 20, 2014

Homecoming Week at Minnesota State University Moorhead Sept. 22 – 27 will feature the typical celebratory events. There will be a neighborhood block party on Sept. 22, academic deans will compete for best chili on Thursday and on Saturday, Sept. 27 there will be a parade, tailgating and the big football game.

Homecoming Week activities will also include the inauguration of President Anne Blackhurst as MSUM’s 11th president. Blackhurst, an avid long distance runner, began her presidency July 1 and Laps for the Long Run will recognize her term while raising money for scholarships. But rather than just asking for donations, Blackhurst will earn the money. She has pledged to run 50 laps around the Ron Masanz Track at Nemzek Field for a distance of 12.5 miles and she has invited others to make pledges for every lap she runs. The money will be used for a new series of Presidential Merit Scholarships that will be awarded to high achieving high school students. Read the rest of this entry →
