Welcome Dragons into the alumni family

Posted on May 12, 2017

Friday, May 12, be a part of the Annual Alumni Flag Corps. Please join us as we smile and wave flags, welcoming Dragons into the alumni family for the ceremony. Please show up 15 minutes prior to the ceremony so we can be prepared for the graduates as they walk by. This is a great way for you to see the new grads and for them to see you celebrating their success and graduation. Commencement brings to light the importance of why we are here. Feel free to invite others who might enjoy being a part of the flag welcome for the new grads as they enter the ceremony. Thanks to all who help make graduation a special day for these new alumni! Spring Scholarship Gala | Students Directly Impacted by Event Proceeds

Posted on April 14, 2016

By Meghan Feir

On Saturday, April 23, 2016, MSUM will once again be hosting an event targeted toward raising money for need-based, merit, academic and athletic student scholarships. Previously known as the Founders Scholarship Gala, the Spring Scholarship Gala is the university’s biggest fundraising event and directly impacts the lives of students across departments.

On a seemingly regular school day, Tomi Thompson got a call from her cousin, MSUM Mass Communications Department Secretary Wendy Olsgard. Deadlines were approaching for scholarship applications and the encouraging cousin knew Thompson was more than qualified.

Fast forward to 2016. With tears in her eyes, the senior, double-majoring in broadcast journalism and integrated advertising and public relations, explained how receiving scholarships made it possible for her to accept an internship with the Minnesota Vikings last summer. Enrollment, donations up at MSUM; University Excellence Awards announced

Posted on August 18, 2010

By Amy Dalrymple, INFORUM

Minnesota State University Moorhead President Edna Szymanski literally jumped for joy Tuesday. Szymanski was ecstatic to deliver news to faculty and staff during an all-university meeting that enrollment projections are up and fundraising last year was at a record high.

But not all of Szymanski’s updates prompted her to jump.

After solving one budget crisis, the university expects a continued decrease of state funding for at least 10 years. The worst-case scenario as the campus prepares for the 2012 biennium could mean the elimination of temporary positions.

“I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else facing this challenge,” Szymanski said. “We’ve already demonstrated we can come together creatively and innovate.”

The hard work of the admissions and marketing staff is behind the projected enrollment increases for this fall, said Diane Solinger, vice president of enrollment management. Read the rest of this entry →

Visiting artist, author Jonathan Twingley delivers lecture Oct. 28

Posted on October 21, 2009

jon5webNew York artist and author of “The Badlands Saloon” Jonathan Twingley will be a visiting artist-in-residence at Minnesota State University Moorhead Oct. 28 and 29. As part of his campus visit, he will deliver a free public lecture on “Words and Pictures” at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28 in the Center for Business room 109. He will conclude his talk by showing images and reading selections from “The Badlands Saloon.”

Twingley, a Bismarck, N.D., native, earned his bachelor of fine arts degree from MSU Moorhead in 1996. He also completed his MFA in illustration at the School of Visual Arts in New York and has been a working illustrator/artist for the past 11 years.

His work appears regularly in many national publications, including the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, The Atlantic Monthly, The New Republic and The Progressive, among many others. Twingley’s first solo exhibition was at Moorhead’s Rourke Art Gallery and he continues to exhibit his work there or in the Rourke Art Museum on a regular basis.

In 2003, PRINT magazine featured his work in a showcase of 20 artists under the age of 30. His work has also been recognized by the Society of Illustrators, American Illustration, Communication Arts magazine and the Society of Publication Designers. He is a senior lecturer at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Pa.

Scribner published his debut, illustrated novel, “The Badlands Saloon,” in July 2009. The 224-pagethe-badlands-saloon-coverweb hardcover is a story about a young man’s restless and life-changing summer spent in a small North Dakota tourist town. The New York Times Book Review writes: “Before the summer’s out, young Ollie will learn the usual life lessons, amid much faux wisdom that crumbles under the glare of the trailer-park lights. The book’s chief attraction is Twingley’s sketchbook of illustrations, whose broad outsider-art strokes work in concert with Ollie’s naïve ruminations.”

Twingley’s visit is funded by a grant from the Solomon G. Comstock Memorial Fund of the Minneapolis Foundation and the MSUM Alumni Foundation.
