Faculty members of the School of Performing Arts are presenting a Faculty Recital Thursday, September 14, at 7:30 p.m. in Glasrud Auditorium in Weld Hall.

Performers are Terrie Manno, Kevin Priebe, Erynn Millard, David Ferreira, Tiana Grise, Earnest Lamb, Elise Nelson, Jenny Dufault, Stephen Sulich (Concordia College faculty member performing as a guest), Kevin Zepper (MSUM English faculty member performing as a guest), Tom Strait, Michael Krajewski and Allen Carter. Allen Carter featured on Prairie Public’s Dimensions in Jazz

Tonight, MSUM’s own Allen Carter will be featured on Dimensions in Jazz. Dimensions in Jazz airs on Prairie Public on Friday nights at 11 p.m. and is produced by Bob Schieffer (Media Services). Dr. Carter joins Bob in the studio to talk about his newest CD release Time On My Hands. The show will feature music from that CD. Prairie Public is located at 91.9 FM in the Fargo-Moorhead area as well as on transponders throughout North Dakota and on their app.

‘Time On My Hands’ Receives 4.5 Star Review

Professor of Music Allen Carter’s new CD “Time On My Hands” has received a highly positive review in the publication All About Jazz garnering 4 1/2 out of a possible 5 star rating. The review states that, “Simply, it can’t be done any better.” Along with citing the quality of Carter’s work, the review also points to the audio engineering work of MSUM colleague Ryan Jackson. Dr. Allen Carter to write piece for upcoming International Trumpet Guild conference

Having just received the recording of his commissioned piece “Unbridled Joy” on the CD “Collaborations” by trombonist Nat Dickey, Associate Professor of Music Allen Carter has been contacted by Italian trumpet virtuoso Andrea Tofanelli to write a piece that will be premiered at the upcoming International Trumpet Guild conference in May of 2015. This will be the third composition/arrangement Dr. Carter has done for Mr. Tofanelli, the first two appearing on Andrea’s CD entitled “Flamingo”.

Bassist Tony Grey to present three master classes

On Wednesday, April 16, bassist Tony Grey will present three master classes at 9 a.m. (music business), 11 a.m. (modern electric bass techniques), and 1 p.m. (improvisation) in Fox Recital Hall.

That evening at 7:30 p.m. in Fox Recital Hall, Grey will present a concert featuring MSUM jazz faculty Tom Strait, Allen Carter, and Michael J. Krajewski. Chris Gould will also perform with the group.

Saxophonist Steve Cole to perform with music faculty and student

On Wednesday, March 5, saxophonist Steve Cole will present two master classes at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. in Fox Recital Hall.

That evening at 7:30 p.m. in Fox Recital Hall, Cole will present a concert featuring MSUM jazz faculty Tom Strait, Allen Carter, Doug Neil, and Michael J. Krajewski. MSUM student, Chad Hanson will also perform with the group.

Monday night Big Band returns to Studio 222

Seventeen of the area’s best jazz musicians come together Monday, Oct. 14 at 8 p.m. for the first concert of their season. Led by Associate Professor of Music Allen Carter, the ensemble has raised thousands of dollars in recent years that go to assist young jazz musicians at the three area universities. There is a $7.00 cover charge and all monies go directly to student assistance.

Music Department to present faculty recital Saturday night

Members of the MSUM Department of Music will combine their talents to present a Faculty Recital this Saturday, Sept. 21 at 7:30 p.m. in Weld Hall (Glasrud Auditorium). The recital will feature performances by Elise Buffat-Nelson, Raychl Smith, Terrie Manno, Kevin Zepper, Sue Nagel, Tianna Grise, Jenny Dufault, Annette Richter, Kenyon Williams, Julie Adams, and Allen Carter. The concert will feature a variety of works for piano, voice, strings, winds, guitar, and percussion.

Carter, Ferreira and Strait present “Miles Davis – Kind of Blue”

MSUM music faculty, Allen Carter, David Ferreira and Tom Strait, will present “Miles Davis – Kind of Blue,” an evening of music, discourse and dining on Tuesday, March 26, 6:30-9 p.m. at the Speak Easy Restaurant.

The epic 1959 Miles Davis recording sold more than 5 million copies. The performance of the entire record will be interwoven with interesting stories about the making of “Kind of Blue” and the musicians who created it. Read the rest of this entry →

Communiversity brochures available in Library

F/M Communiversity winter/spring 2012 course brochures are available at Livingston Lord Library. Communiversity is a “university for the community” of lifelong learners, offering a variety of interesting, engaging courses for people of all ages and educational backgrounds. There are no tests, grades or papers – just the pleasure of learning. MSUM faculty teaching courses this semester include Steve Bolduc, Ellen Brisch, Allen Carter, Jim Danielson, David Ferreira and Phil Mouch. Dr. Sue Humphers-Ginther, Sociology, serves as MSUM’s representative to Communiversity’s planning committee.

History of Jazz meets Tuesday evenings

Jazz has been referred to as the only musical art form born in America. From its roots to the music of the present day, every type of jazz created will be discussed, analyzed and listened to in class. In class performances and guest lecturers will illuminate topics relevant to specific instruments and genres. The instructor, Dr. Allen Carter, has been a working jazz player and writer for many years, having become acquainted with several of the art forms major performers.

His recent CD “Gifts” was just voted one of the top 10 big band CDs of 2010 by All About Jazz. Join us and develop your ear for America’s music with an active practitioner of the art form.

The class, MUS 215 – HISTORY OF JAZZ  (3 cr; Course ID: 002593), meets Tuesdays beginning Jan. 11 from 7 to 10 p.m. in CA 146.

Allen Carter’s Big Band returns Sept. 6

Associate Professor of Music Allen Carter’s 17-piece Monday Night Big Band returns for its first performance of the new season on Labor Day, Monday, September 6 at 8 p.m. at Studio 222 located at 222 Broadway in Fargo.

The band, comprised of the finest jazz musicians in the region, performs once a month (typically the first Monday of the month) and all proceeds go for scholarships to jazz students at the three local universities. The performers donate their services. Cover charge is $5.

Come hear some great jazz and donate to a worthwhile cause on Labor Day!

MSUM Jazz Ensemble, Tri-College Combos win awards at the Eau Claire Jazz Festival

MSUM Jazz groups had a successful trip to the 2010 Eau Claire Jazz Festival this past weekend taking four out of seven awards possible.

• MSUM Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of  Allen Carter, received third place.

• Tri-College Combo II, under the direction of Simon Rowe, received second place.

• Tri-College Combo I, under the direction of Nick Fryer, received first place and an award for “Best Soloist” going to Chris Schuster (NDSU).

Don’t miss the now award-winning MSUM Jazz Ensemble this Thursday, April 22 with Jazz Trumpeter Marvin Stamm at 7:30 p.m. in the Hansen Theatre.

Simon Rowe Organ Trio Playing Sept. 4

The Simon Rowe Trio and the Simon Rowe Organ Trio will be performing regularly this fall (mostly on Fridays) at Studio 222, a new downtown jazz hangout located at 222 North Broadway in Fargo.

The Simon Rowe Trio (SRT) includes Bill Law (bass), Allen Carter (drums), and Simon Rowe (piano). The Simon Rowe Organ Trio (SROT) features Nick Fryer (guitar), Allen Carter (drums), and Simon Rowe (organ).

SROT’s first performance is Friday, Sept. 4 at 8:30 p.m. and also features Tom Strait (trumpet, horn).

Cover charge is $10, $5 for students.
