What’s happening in Admissions

Each week the Office of Admissions will be sharing a few things happening on campus and in our recruiting territories. We hope to provide you with a brief look into what’s happening in Admissions.

  • We will be hosting students from College Possible on March 25. The College Possible Minnesota Organization coaches low-income students to and through college. They proudly to be serving more than 2,500 high school students attending 56 high schools across the state, and 5,500 college students on 249 campuses across the country.
    • Admissions has partnered with College Possible to host their students for a visit to MSU Moorhead on Saturday, March 25. Students will be connected with current students, faculty, and staff at MSUM to explore diversity and inclusion, academic life, student experiences, paying for college, and many other great things we have to offer. Please join us in welcoming College Possible!
  • We will be hosting a transfer night on April 4 where prospective students will have the chance to learn what it will take to transfer to MSUM and experience what it’s like to be a student at MSUM. It is an informative and informal open house for students to engage with faculty, receive advising, and explore campus.
  • A big thank you to everyone who participated in Preview Days this past Saturday! As always, we wouldn’t be able to do it without the help of our faculty and staff members.

MSU Moorhead Admissions will be hosting a Campus Preview Day this Saturday, March 18. Prospective students and their guests will have the opportunity to meet with faculty, current students, student services and explore campus with our Dragon Ambassadors.

  • #BeADragon scholarship winners will be announced this week. Please watch the admissions Twitter and Facebook pages for the surprise announcements with each student!
  • Admissions Representatives will be visiting three M State campuses for Transfer Fairs this week.
  • Admissions Representatives in the Twin Cities area will be attending transfer fairs across the metro.
  • Locally, Admissions Representatives will be presenting at Moorhead High School to students (in Mrs. Puffy’s classroom) regarding career choices.

MSUM Spring enrollment sees increases

Significant Gains in Graduate, International and New Undergraduates  

Thirty-day figures released this week show MSUM’s enrollment for new entering graduate students continues to grow with a 25% increase over last spring, with new entering domestic undergraduate students up 10.3%, and new entering international students up 19%.   • We are excited to welcome our newest member of the admissions team, Scott. Scott will be joining us from the University of Minnesota Crookston where he previously served as an admissions counselor. Scott will be taking over the role of our admissions representative and will work with prospective first-year students from North Dakota and northwest Minnesota.
  • Our February Preview Days was a success and we look forward to hosting another Preview Days in March. They will be held March 17 and 18. We want to thank everyone who has participated and who will continue to participate with this event.

#BeADragon contest updates

If you haven’t checked it out already, Admissions encourages you to check out all of the #BeADragon contest entries on Twitter. We have already announced our first winner of a $2,500 contest and will be announcing the remaining 5 winners the week of March 6. Here are a few updates on the contest so far:

  • Each admissions representative has a goal of a certain amount of contest entries and admits they are trying to meet during the duration of the contest. We are excited to announce that our transfer representative, Audrey Cloe, has already surpassed her goal within the first few weeks of the contest. Congrats, Audrey!
  • We have seen a huge spike in our social media activity over the past month reaching thousands of people each week. Our Facebook live video of the first winner has hit over 5,000 views.
  • We are currently sharing a countdown of how many days are left in the contest via our social media platforms. We would encourage any faculty and staff members to share these posts to reach a larger audience. If you haven’t already, follow us:

Scott Westby hired as Admissions Representative

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions is pleased to announce that Scott Westby has been appointed as our new Admissions Representative, effective Feb. 27, 2017.

Scott earned his Bachelor of Science in Education degree at Valley City State University. Scott is coming to us from the University of Minnesota – Crookston where he has served as an Admissions Counselor since June of 2016, working with prospective first-year students from North Dakota and northern Minnesota. Prior to that experience, Scott held the position of Enrollment Services Specialist at Valley City State University. Additionally, during his time as an undergraduate at VCSU, he worked with prospective students as a Viking Ambassador where he discovered his passion for admissions and enrollment services.

Scott will work with prospective first-year students from North Dakota and northwest Minnesota.

Each week the Office of Admissions will be sharing a few things happening on campus and in our recruiting territories. We hope to provide you with a brief look into what’s happening in Admissions.

  • Our Dragon Ambassador, Macie, went live with Scorch on Facebook this past week to showcase the Comstock Memorial Union! We have seen an awesome response from this video so far with over 4,100 views of the video and nearly 9,000 people reached. We also obtained several new likes and follows to our page.
  • We plan to highlight buildings, departments, events, and the campus in general each week with a live video. If you would like to showcase your area to prospective/admitted students on our page, please reach out to Mary Maguire at mary.maguire@mnstate.edu. To see what else is going on in admissions and to watch the live videos, like our Facebook page.
  • Our first #BeADragon scholarship winner will be announced February 15. We will be doing a live feed on our Facebook/Instagram page for this as well. We have over 60 entries for the contest already and plan to see an even bigger boost once we announce the first winner. A committee with members outside the admissions department will select the winners based on the creativity of their entry.
  • Our admissions reps will be traveling to various high schools, conferences, and college fairs in Perham, Bismarck, and Alexandria this week promoting MSUM.

Admissions seeking #BeADragon scholarship contest judges

The MSUM Admissions office is seeking judges for the #BeADragon scholarship contest. Volunteer judges will review the submissions and choose the winning entries.

The first of the four $2,500 scholarships will be announced on Feb. 15. Judges will meet between Feb. 13 and 15 to finalize the first scholarship winner.

  • Our #BeADragon scholarship contest is in full swing. We have already seen several tweets come through with reasons why potential students want to be a Dragon. If you want to get involved and see what people are saying, follow us @AdmissionsMSUM and watch for the #BeADragon.
  • We want to send a big thank you out to all of departments across campus who participated at our Preview Days this past Saturday. The next Preview Days will be held Feb. 16-18.
  • We would like to welcome Rachel Brouillard to the admissions department. Rachel has joined the team as our new admissions processor. We look forward to you being part of the Dragon family! Ali Kavanaugh was formerly in this position and will now serve as the Data Analyst for admissions.

  • Our #BeADragon scholarship contest starts up again on Jan. 25. Admitted students for the fall 2017 term have the change to submit their tweet using the #BeADragon for a chance to win one of four $2,500 scholarships or one of two $1,000 scholarships. Get involved with the contest by following us @AdmissionsMSUM and watching for the #BeADragon hashtag. For more information about the contest, visit mnstate.edu/BeADragon.
  • Preview Days will be held this Saturday, Jan. 28. We are excited to meet with prospective students on campus. We want to thank all of the departments who are participating in advance for their hard work.
  • We are still looking to hire Dragon Leadership Positions. The deadline to apply is Feb. 3. If you know of any students who would fit well into these roles, please encourage them to apply or send Jamie Wepking an email at jamie.wepking@mnstate.edu with your student recommendation.

Rachel Brouillard appointed as admissions processor

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions is pleased to announce that Rachel Brouillard has been appointed as our new Admissions Processor, effective Jan. 23, 2017.

Rachel is an alumna of MSUM, graduating with her Bachelor of Science degree in Art Teacher Education in 2010. Over the past five years Rachel has served as the student success advisor at the University of Mary’s Fargo campus. In this role Rachel worked directly with students from admission to the university up to graduation. Prior to her time at University of Mary, Rachel was a unit secretary at Eventide and a sales specialist for Herzberger’s. Rachel brings a wealth of professional experience in higher education that encompasses admissions processing, student advising, academic planning, student orientation, and student advocacy. Additionally, Rachel has demonstrated customer service, data entry, and record keeping skills through previous positions.

  • Our twin cities representatives will be headed to a college fair for 5th and 6th graders to discuss college readiness at an early age. This fair is geared towards a demographic of students who normally would not choose to attend college in their future. Our local reps will be headed to area high schools to talk about our upcoming Be A Dragon scholarship promotion and Preview Days alongside community outreach.
  • Our Admissions Representatives will be headed to Davies High School and Barnesville high school for more ice cream socials. Our reps will be dishing up free ice cream to students who attend the game and to answer questions about all that MSUM has to offer.

  • Over the past few months, we have been working with Marketing on a new packet to send to prospective students once they are admitted and it is finally complete! The packet was created with the intent to get admitted students excited about MSUM and get them engaged with the Admissions department. If you would like to see the new packets, please stop by the front desk in the admissions department in Owens Hall at any time during the week of Jan. 9-13.
  • Our Admissions Representatives will be headed to West Fargo Sheyenne High School for an ice cream social as the Mustangs take on the Davies Eagles. Our reps will be dishing up free ice cream to students who attend the game and to answer questions about all that MSUM has to offer.

  • Over the past few months, we have been working on a new packet to send to prospective students once they are admitted and it is finally complete! The packet was created with the intent to get admitted students excited about MSUM and get them engaged with the Admissions department. If you would like to see the new packets, please stop by the admissions department and we will have one ready for you to see. And trust us, you will want to see them!
  • We will be hosting a Transfer Open House from 2-6 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 21. Prospective students interested in transferring to MSUM can come learn about how to transfer, financial aid, take a tour, and of course enjoy some goodies.

  • Admissions reps will be headed to Davies high school this week for another ice cream social at the South High vs. Davies game. The reps will hand out ice cream while promoting MSUM to high school students.
  • Our reps will also be headed to visit high schools in North Dakota this week. Some high schools include Grafton, Lisbon, and Milnor.
  • We want to extend a big congratulations to our very own Mindy Jo Kraft for graduating this semester. We wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors!

  • We want to extend a huge congratulations to Jamie Wepking who was chosen to be part of the United Way of Cass Clay’s 35 under 35 women’s leadership program. The purpose of the United Way 35 Under 35 Women’s Leadership Program is to mobilize the caring power of women, energize and inspire leaders to make a difference, and to deepen leadership opportunities for local young women. The program is designed to build networks and strengthen connections to improve the quality of life in the Cass-Clay community.
  • Our admissions representatives will be attending various local high school sporting events for ‘ice cream socials’ over the next couple weeks. The ambassadors hand out free ice cream courtesy of MSUM to high school students attending the games.

MSUM Alumnae, Employee Named to United Way’s 35 Under 35 Women’s Leadership Program

The United Way of Cass-Clay announced its 2017 35 Under 35 Women’s Leadership Program participants, which includes seven MSUM alumnae and one employee.

MSUM alumnae include:

  • Jesika Jorgenson, Discovery Benefits
  • Yulia Murzaeva, Widmer Roel
  • Danna Nelson, Fargo Park District

  • Jamie Wepking, Minnesota State University Moorhead

Wepking also works at MSUM as the Assistant Director of Admissions Campus Preview Program and Call Center.

What’s Happening in Admissions

Each week the Office of Admissions will be sharing a few things happening on campus and in our recruiting territories. We hope to provide a brief look into what’s happening in Admissions.

  • During Free App Week, we saw a 24 percent increase from last year in the number of applications that we received. Last year, we had 1,235 applications come in during the week. This year, that number increased by 299 applications for a total of 1,534 applications. We want to extend a huge thank you to the Financial Aid Department who has helped us process all of these applications over the past few weeks.
  • Our admissions reps are busy traveling as usual! They have several local high school visits planned this week to give students more insight into what it’s like to be a Dragon.
