Weld Hall Reopening Following $23M Historic Renovation
Weld Hall, Minnesota State Moorhead’s oldest building, is re-opening this semester following a $23 million renovation that restored the 1914 building to its former glory. Every inch has been touched by structural or aesthetic improvements, including new windows, roofing and flooring; a new stage, seating, sound system and lighting in the Glasrud Auditorium; high-tech classrooms; and a hand-blown glass sculpture above the reconstructed stairs. The art piece was inspired by the original stained-glass windows, which were re-installed in the auditorium.
The College of Arts and Humanities, Honors College, and English Department will all call Weld home.
Classes will resume in the building on Aug. 24. Music performances are scheduled throughout the coming months, including the Alumni Band Concert on Oct. 10 and a Dragon Choir concert on Nov. 1.
A grand re-opening and dedication is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 9. The ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m., followed by a ribbon cutting and open house.
One of the first community-wide events to be hosted in the Glasrud Auditorium will be the One Book One Community author presentation at 7 p.m. Oct. 22, featuring Ian S. Port, author of “The Birth of Loud.”
