IT Network next steps

Campus Colleagues,

Our IT Team will be implementing two changes in the coming weeks to address ongoing network slowness. One change will affect campus system availability; the other will occur behind the scenes.

1) Patch management updates (starting next week)
We’re improving our patching process by moving from a single update window (Wednesday night/Thursday morning) to a staggered schedule across Wednesday–Friday:

  • Wednesdays: IT/AIR/OOL
  • Thursdays: Offices & Staff
  • Fridays: Faculty

No action is needed outside of IT.

2) Core network switch replacement (Saturday, May 16 | 6:00 p.m.)
On Saturday, May 16 at 6:00 p.m., we will replace the remaining core switch in our network. The first switch was replaced over Spring Break; this replacement is the next critical step to improve campus network performance.

Expected impact
Many network services (including Housing and Residence Halls) will be unavailable beginning Saturday afternoon and may remain offline for up to 6 hours. Services affected may include printing, internet access, ticketing systems, VPN, Office 365, and Zoom. Doors/locks will continue to function, but remote control and schedule changes will not be available during the outage.

If you need phone service during the outage and have a Zoom Phone Plan, please ensure Zoom is installed on an appropriate mobile device.

If you have questions or concerns, please contact IT.

Thank you for your patience and support.
