CMU to unveil new sculpture by art ed student Dennis Williams
Gauntlet Sculpture Unveiling and Reception | Tuesday, Nov. 18 | 3 p.m. | CMU Sun Garden Lounge
Join us for the unveiling of Gauntlet, a powerful new sculpture by Dennis Williams, a contemporary Indigenous artist, a member of the White Earth Nation-Pillager Band of Ojibwe, and a Minnesota State Moorhead art education major. Gauntlet reflects the challenges and choices of education, rooted in Ojibwe heritage and resilience. It is now part of the Comstock Memorial Union’s permanent art collection.

Dedicated to honoring traditional teachings while blending modern materials and techniques into his work, Williams focuses on regalia-making for powwow dancers, especially in the fancy style, as well as sculpting, storytelling through oratory, beading, and other art forms.
“I love to combine traditional and modern materials in my artwork, such as leather, velvet, ribbon, fabric, fur, bone, cut beads, rhinestones, mirrors, paint, dye, metal, wood, laser etching, and computer design,” Williams said. “My work reflects my cultural heritage and the influence of modern technology, blending the old with the new to create something unique and beautiful.”
All are welcome. Refreshments will be served following the unveiling.
Sponsored by the Comstock Memorial Union and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.
