Important IT Updates for Summer 2025: Zoom Phones, Windows 11, and Wi-Fi Upgrades
Important updates on three key IT projects scheduled for this summer that will directly impact your work: the transition to Zoom phones, the upgrade to Windows 11 (due to Windows 10 reaching end of life), and campus-wide Wi-Fi improvements. Change can sometimes cause temporary disruption, and we appreciate your patience and cooperation as we work to enhance our technology.
Zoom phones next steps:
- Assessing Current Phone Needs: IT is currently working with over 60 individuals across campus to review hundreds of existing phone numbers for potential removal.
- Streamlining Phone Inventory: Removal of unnecessary or unused phone numbers and providing physical phones where needed.
- Number Migration: Coordinate with Zoom to port over active phone lines to Zoom phones.
- Migration will be by department so watch for email communication for your expected date.
- User Training and Setup: We will provide setup instructions to all new Zoom phone users.
Timeline: Projected to be completed by end of July 2025 but will be dependent on Zoom support and staffing.
Windows 11 update next steps:
- Faculty Laptop Updates: Faculty are encouraged to update their university-issued laptops prior to leaving campus for the summer. If this is not possible, please plan to complete the update over the summer. Instructions were distributed to department OASs.
- Support for Campus Offices: Campus support offices will receive communication from IT with a date/time they will be available in your area to assist with updates.
- Updates will be rolled out gradually throughout the summer, by office. Leadership in the area will be contacted prior to the anticipated update window.
Timeline: Updates have begun for faculty and a few isolated support offices. The remaining offices will be completed by no later than August/September. It is crucial that all computers are updated before Microsoft ends support for Windows 10 in October 2025.
Wi-Fi upgrades:
- Equipment Procurement: Cabling and equipment has been purchased by IT.
- Implementation Planning: IT will finalize prioritization order of equipment installation and schedule.
- Timeline: Projected to be completed early August 2025, prior to the start of the Fall semester.
We understand these concurrent projects represent sizable changes, and we appreciate your understanding as we work to improve your technology resources.
