Author, runner & professor Kevin Carollo to read from his book SHRED! on April 24
Thursday, April 24 | at 4 p.m. | Comstock Memorial Union room 105
Minnesota State University Moorhead English Professor and author Kevin Carollo will read from his recent book, “Shred! Running and Being,” at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 24, in the university’s Comstock Memorial Union room 105. A question-and-answer session will follow the reading. Books will be available for purchase.

The free public reading is part of the Sand/McGrath Visiting Writers Series.
Published by NDSU Press (2024), “Shred!” is “set in his cozy ‘sunroom bunker’ during the 2020 pandemic…a philosopher’s daily meditation designed like an ‘old-school runner’s log’ where Carollo deconstructs human connection in a time of lockdown, social distancing, climate catastrophe and global unrest.” It examines deep personal despair and grief, proving that movement creates movement, and humanity is at its best when we’re cheering each other on from start to finish.
Carollo has taught at MSUM since 2003. Along with introductory writing courses on art, war, society and work, food, and consumer culture, he has developed original world literature curricula, including “Nonfiction Writing for the End Times,” “Literary Animals,” “Island Consciousness and the Ocean of Time,” “The Absurd and Fantastic World,” “Time and Literatures of the Post,” “World Poetry,” and “Crime and Punishment.”

Carollo is the author of “Elizabeth Gregory,” a poetry chapbook about early onset dementia, love, and Beatlemania (OHM Editions/Rain Taxi). His poems are published in “Collateral,” “The New Guard,” “Moon City Review,” and elsewhere.
Carollo ran three marathons when he was 12 and his fourth in Rome over 30 years later. With 22 marathons and counting, he has completed the Boston Marathon eight times, and won races in five states.
He runs, writes, and teaches for peace and justice.
MSUM is committed to creating an inclusive and accessible event. If you need a reasonable accommodation to attend this event, please contact Chuck Eade at Charles.Eade@mnstate.edu. You will be contacted individually to discuss your request.
About the Sand/McGrath Visiting Writers Series
The Sand/McGrath Visiting Writers Series brings to campus some of the finest contemporary writers to read and share their work with students, faculty, and the community. The series has featured more than 150 writers and sponsored or supported over 50 other writers and events since its inaugural season. The series is named in honor of the late Thomas R. Sand and the late Thomas McGrath. For more than four decades, Tom Sand was a political strategist, researcher, and writer who helped shape Minnesota and federal agricultural and social policies. Thomas McGrath was an internationally recognized and award-winning author who taught at Moorhead State University from 1969-1983. The Sand/McGrath Visiting Writers Series is supported by a gift from the late Tom Sand and a grant from the Solomon Comstock Fund of the Minneapolis Foundation.
