MSUM is looking for more students in all programs to become Learning Assistants (LAs)
Gain valuable experience as a Learning Assistant | Learn more about the Learning Assistant Program | Applications are open for fall semester
What is a Learning Assistant (LA)?
A Learning Assistant (LA) is a student who has already taken a course and comes back to help current students better learn the material during class. LAs are similar to tutors and teaching assistants, though their main role is to serve as peer-instructors who assist other students during in-class activities. LAs can also hold review sessions outside of class and may assist instructors with classroom preparation and grading. While they do not teach courses, they strengthen the student learning experience for everyone.
Why should I become a Learning Assistant (LA)?
- Learn the course content better.
- Gain practical and professional experience.
- Find community with other LAs on campus.
- Strengthen your relationship with faculty.
- Work at a convenient on-campus job.
“Some of the soft skills I’ve acquired are communication, time management, and organization,” says Paige Ackerson, a learning assistant for both Microbiology and Cell Biology. “I’ve also improved upon some hard skills that are essential for lab work…My career goals involve working either in forensic or medical lab science, so being able to practice these skills is a wonderful experience.”
What courses/departments need Learning Assistants (LA)?
While not all courses or instructors utilize the Learning Assistant program, many do, and the program is rapidly expanding to new departments, so more courses are in need of LAs than ever! Students can potentially be an LA for any course on campus if they have instructor approval and have earned an A or B in the class they wish to become an LA for.
What are the benefits of the Learning Assistant (LA) program?
- Improved GPA
- Improved retention
- Improved graduation rates
- Strengthened student learning experience for everyone
“Working with an instructor allows them to get to know you better – your passions, your habits, and how you work. This is especially great if you need a letter of recommendation for future endeavors,” Paige says. “Making connections with the students is also beneficial. Since becoming an LA, I’ve had a job offer from one of the students who works in the field I’m interested in!”
What do I need to do to apply to be a Learning Assistant (LA)?
- “Students can apply to become LAs by visiting the MSUM Learning Assistant website and filling out an application form, in addition to personally reaching out to faculty they wish to LA for,” said Jon Bell-Clement, Learning Assistant Program Coordinator.
- Interested students are also required to enroll in the LA Training Seminar (BIOL 389 or XXX 389 equivalent) for Fall 2024. As incentive to take the course, LAs who take or have taken the seminar earn an extra $1 to their hourly wage!
