MSUM, Lutheran Social Services of North Dakota to host Therapeutic Partners in Child Welfare Conference

Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM) and Lutheran Social Services of North Dakota (LSSND) Abound Counseling are co-hosting a Therapeutic Partners in Child Welfare Conference Oct. 8-9, 2018 in the MSUM Comstock Memorial Union Ballroom. Registration opens Aug. 6.
The conference aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of the various partners involved in service to child welfare youth. Minnesota and North Dakota social workers, social work students, and foster, adoption and kinship parents are invited to attend the two-day conference.
Session topics include: creating system change in child welfare, providing responsive services to transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals, developing trauma-informed parenting strategies for caregivers, sharing information about missing and murdered indigenous women, as well as providing insights on how the opioid crisis is affecting foster care. Two panels are also scheduled.
The conference will feature leaders in child welfare, including Korina Barry, MSW, LGSW, director of outreach at the Center for Advanced Studies in Child Welfare; Allison Blake, PhD, senior fellow with the Annie E. Casey Foundation; and Tami DeCoteau, PhD, LP, a trust-based relational intervention practitioner in Bismarck, N.D. Local experts will also contribute to the conversation.
“The MSUM School of Social Work is excited to partner with LSSND in hosting an outstanding conference centered on child welfare practice,” said Dr. Jeremy Carney, MSUM School of Social Work. “National and regional experts will be sharing ideas designed to improve practice skills and service delivery systems. Students will have an opportunity to learn about best practices in the field, current issues affecting policy and practice, and develop their professional networks.”
Fourteen continuing education units (CEUs) are available for North Dakota and Minnesota social workers who attend the two-day conference. The registration fee is $99, or $55 for one day of attendance. Lunch is included. Scholarships are available for foster, adoption and kinship parents, as well as for social work students.
