Forum editorial: Restoring downtown Moorhead’s former glory
Fargo’s downtown began a transformation two decades ago. It’s easy to forget that what’s now a bustling entertainment and retail destination in the heart of the city once had deteriorated into an uninviting eyesore. Moorhead’s downtown has suffered from similar problems, common to many downtowns that were hollowed out during the misguided “urban renewal” period of the 1960s and ’70s.
Moorhead has been trying for years to enliven its downtown, with steps including recent redevelopments that nicely blend with the remaining old buildings. Now civic, business and higher education leaders are launching a new effort to bring vitality back to Moorhead’s downtown. It’s off to a promising start, with $500,000 in pledges to help start the initiative, which will be led by local campus presidents, underscoring Moorhead’s strong and distinctive higher education presence.
