SLHS Department awarded grant for development of Sensory Integration Resource Center
Mari Beth Plankers, M.S., CCC-SLP and Rachel Stotts, M.S., CCC-SLP submitted a grant application to the “Dille Fund for Excellence” to develop a Sensory Integration (SI) Resource Center in the SLHS Clinic. Sensory integration (SI) and intervention has been used for the treatment of numerous individuals with a wide range of learning and developmental challenges. SI refers to the ability to organize, integrate, and use information from the body and the environment. Speech and language development relies on multiple sensory processes; therefore, an SLP needs to understand the normal SI processes related to communication and be able identify when there is a problem. SI theory is founded on the belief that the integration of the sensory system is the foundation for successful development of motor abilities, organization, attention, language, and interpersonal relationships.
