MSUM Journalism Students Win Award for Online Magazine
Nineteen students in a capstone online journalism seminar at Minnesota State University Moorhead won an Emmy in the category Advanced Media Student Production from the Upper Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for their online magazine, Horizonlines.org.
This is the third year in a row that MSUM students have received an Emmy award. MSUM broadcast students won an Emmy the previous two years for their documentaries, “The Greatest Silent Sport” in 2007-08 and “Walk into the Wild” in 2006-07.
The awards were presented Sept. 26 in Minneapolis. The Upper Midwest region includes Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Iowa.
Horizonlines.org is an online general interest magazine produced by MSUM students under the direction of Reggie Radniecki, assistant professor of mass communications. Students from a variety of disciplines come together each spring to produce the annual magazine.
This year’s issue of Horizonlines.org, “Collective Histories: Images and Stories Reflecting a Region’s Past,” focuses on small towns in rural Minnesota and North Dakota to explore our collective history. It features 17 stories, 19 slideshows and two videos complete with music soundtracks composed, produced and arranged by one of the staff. 
“Horizonlines is a unique, collaborative effort, and to be honest is one of the reasons I chose to go to MSUM,” said Alyssa Schafer, managing editor of the project. “This is a good example of how MSUM is keeping up with new media. Reggie works night and day to make her students successful and to produce work that will benefit their careers. This project and the Emmy win are a perfect example of that success.”
Schafter is now the editor of the Washburn (N.D.) Leader News and the Underwood (N.D.) News.
Since its inaugural issue in 2002, the magazine has won 30 national and regional awards.
