Physics seminar Oct. 7 on “Supernova 2011fe, Nobel Prizes, and You”

A Physics seminar on “Supernova 2011fe, Nobel Prizes, and You” will be held Friday, October 7 from 2:30 to 3:20 p.m. in Hagen Hall 325. The speaker is Matt Craig from the MSUM Department of Physics.

This talk will be woven from three related threads:

• Recent science, presenting a very preliminary light curve for the recent supernova 2011fe in the spiral galaxy M101based on data taken at MSUM’s Feder Observatory.

• Science in the news, discussing briefly the science behind the Nobel Prize in Physics, announced on Oct. 4, awarded for the discovery of the acceleration of the universe’s expansion, and its relationship to the supernova in M101.

• Science and you, promoting (shamelessly) the opportunities for you to become involved in a wide variety of research projects using the telescope.
