A $50,000 flush is money down the drain

When it comes to campus plumbing, what goes down doesn’t always stay down. And it’s creating a costly mess.

The university continues to experience sewage backups and related issues on a weekly basis in several campus buildings, including this week in Hagen Hall. These problems are largely caused by paper towels and “flushable” wipes.

Cleanup and repairs are costly. A few years ago, a backup in Lommen Hall cost the university about $50,000. That is not money well spent.

To help prevent future incidents, Facilities will begin removing paper towels from restrooms in several campus buildings.

The dirty truth

“Flushable’ and paper towels don’t break down like toilet paper. They clog pipes, cause sewage backups, and create expensive maintenance problems. Please remember to flush only the three Ps:

  • Pee
  • Poo
  • (toilet) Paper

Dragons, let’s keep our campus clean, our plumbing flowing, and our money out of the drain.
