IT Network and WiFi Update
Campus Colleagues and Students,
We are currently navigating several overlapping network and WiFi issues on campus. While we are working toward solutions, we know the instability has been frustrating. We appreciate your patience and grace as we address these challenges. Below is an update on what’s happening and the steps underway.
Network Slowness
Issue:
Our primary campus network is managed by MN IT and is required for accessing systems like ISRS containing sensitive data and wired workstation connections. Recently, the MN IT load balancers, which regulate capacity across campuses, have been throttling traffic unpredictably causing significant slowness and instability. A system-level fix has not yet been identified.
What We’re Doing:
While MN IT continues its work, MSUM IT is building a local routing solution to shift non sensitive traffic to an alternate carrier. Sensitive data will remain on the MN IT network, but shifting non-sensitive traffic will reduce strain and improve overall performance.
No action will be required on your part; routing will occur automatically once implemented.
Timeline:
This work is a top priority, but we don’t yet have a completion date. We will share updates as we have more information.
WiFi Connectivity
Issue:
Some areas of campus are experiencing slow or dropped wireless connections on both MSUM issued and personal devices.
What We’re Doing:
Last summer we launched a project to expand and upgrade our wireless access points (APs) to add 700 new units. We are halfway through installation.
Classrooms are the top priority, followed by high use student and staff spaces such as the library, union, and offices. We are working with our vendor to accelerate the installation schedule.
Timeline:
Originally scheduled for summer completion, we are pushing for an earlier finish by working with our vendor.
Moving Forward
While we cannot yet provide completion dates, please know we are fully aware of the impact these issues are having and are working diligently to resolve them. Your continued reports, questions, and feedback are incredibly helpful as we work toward stable, long term solutions.
Thank you again for your patience and understanding.
