Dr. Carlson Co-publishes Systematic Review on Transformational Technology Leadership
Dr. Kristen Carlson, Associate Professor of Leadership and Learning and Director of Teacher Education at Minnesota State Moorhead, has published a peer-reviewed article in Contemporary Issues in Technology and Teacher Education titled “Transformational Technology Leadership in Higher Education: A Systematic Review of Pedagogical Practice.” The study was co-authored with collaborators from Texas A&M University–Central Texas and the University of Rochester.
The article synthesizes findings from 13 empirical studies published between 2010 and 2024 to examine how higher education leaders conceptualize and enact pedagogical technology leadership. Anchored in Transformational Leadership Theory and TPACK, the review identifies intellectual stimulation as the most commonly observed leadership dimension in digital teaching and learning contexts. The authors also found that technological pedagogical knowledge plays a central role in shaping effective, equity-oriented instructional innovation.
Key implications highlight how faculty development, collaborative leadership structures, and strategic visioning contribute to the creation of responsive and inclusive digital learning ecosystems. The review offers actionable insights for academic leaders, instructional designers, and educator preparation programs navigating rapid technological change.
