Professor and alum Yahya Frederickson publishes new poetry collection set in Morocco
A new collection of poems by MSUM English professor and alum (’85) Yahya Frederickson is being published. The new chapbook, titled Khumásiyát: Poems from the Moroccan Desert, is a collection of poems inspired by the Imazighen (“Berber”) people and the Saharan landscape they inhabit.

Frederickson was inspired to compose the collection while on sabbatical in 2023, during which he spent some time as a writer-in-residence at Café Tissardmine, an artists’ residency in Morocco.
The chapbook cover was designed by MSUM student Lindsey H. Nelsen of University Marketing & Communications.
Khumásiyát — the Arabic word for a poetic form containing five units — is Frederickson’s seventh collection of poems. It is slated for publication by Finishing Line Press in summer 2025 and is currently in its advance sales period.
