MOORHEAD — The oldest building at Minnesota State University Moorhead is well on the way to its original splendor and new role as a 21st century education and performance setting.

A $23 million renovation of Weld Hall is at the approximate halfway point, based on a projected finish this winter and fall 2026 opening to students.

Amid the sounds of saws and hammers, The Forum toured the building at 1201 Sixth Ave. S. on Tuesday, March 25, to offer readers a view of the progress.

Brenda Norris, executive director of facilities management at MSUM, led the way.

“I try to get over here just about every day, because a lot happens in a day,” she said.

Story highlights:

  • Renovations include new mechanical and electrical systems, fire sprinklers and upgrades to make it accessible.
  • New elevators and a new main entrance on the north side of the building is being constructed.
  • Glasrud Auditorium will be entirely refurbished to include a restoration of the grand balcony.
  • Wood finishes will be featured throughout for sound quality. The original wood ceiling remains in place, and wood wainscoting will cover the walls.
  • A curved, wooden stage will be built that’s big enough for a full orchestra.
  • The south side of the building will be reconfigured to bring more natural light into what used to be dark spaces.
  • A “sculpture” of glass pieces will be hung loosely overhead in the shape of a dragon.
