Successful Community Event Paves the Way for Kurdistan Diaspora Center in Moorhead
This past Sunday, June 9, MSUM’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion hosted a community town hall with Rahim Rashide, a representative of the Kurdistan Diaspora Confederation, along with local members of the Kurdish community. The event, focused on discussing the future establishment of the Kurdistan Diaspora Center of Minnesota in Moorhead, home to the state’s largest Kurdish population, was a resounding success. With standing-room-only attendance, the event showcased the strength and resilience of our community.
Provost Jackson opened the town hall with a warm welcome and remarks that underscored the university’s commitment to this important initiative. He highlighted MSUM’s pivotal role in providing education and extended an invitation to continue the partnership in fostering cultural and educational opportunities.
The following day, June 10, Rahim Rashide and the newly elected board of the Kurdistan Diaspora Center of Minnesota, which includes MSUM Honor student and newly elected vice president, Ashna Oray, convened with community leaders, non-profit organizations, first responders, and other community members. This meeting aimed to explore potential collaborations and partnerships with existing learning and community groups, emphasizing a united approach to supporting the Kurdish community in Minnesota.
We are thrilled about the future of this partnership and look forward to the impactful work ahead in establishing the Kurdistan Diaspora Center of Minnesota as a cornerstone of cultural and educational support in our community.
