Straw Hat Players summer theatre opens its 61st season June 4

Two shows on MSUM’s Straw Hat Players lineup

MSU Moorhead’s Straw Hat Players continues its summer tradition of entertaining the community with the opening show, Swing!, June 4-6 at 7:30 p.m. in the Roland Dille Center for the Arts Gaede Stage. Swing! shattered ethnic and cultural barriers, generating specialty styles such as jive, lindy hop, West Coast swing, and hip-hop swing. Swing! celebrates this remarkable diversity to the beat of the most exhilarating songs of the period. Enjoy classic hits such as It Don’t Mean a Thing,” “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” “I’ll Be Seeing You,” and “Stompin’ at the Savoy.”

In collaboration with Act Up Theatre, the second show of the season is the timeless classic Fiddler on the Roof starring Ted Horan, one of the community’s most visible actors, which will be presented at 7:30 p.m. June 11-15 in the Roland Dille Center for the Arts Gaede Stage. The story centers on Tevye, a poor milkman, and his five daughters. With the help of a colorful and tight-knit Jewish community, Tevye tries to protect his daughters and instill them with traditional values in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism in the world around him. Fiddler on the Roof’s universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality, and religion, leaving audiences crying tears of laughter, joy, and sadness.

Tickets are available at mnstate.edu/tickets or by calling the box office at 218.477.2271 during office hours. The theatre doors will open at 7 p.m., and all shows begin at 7:30 p.m.
