MSUM hosts free public screening of The Loyola Project Feb. 1

Thursday, Feb. 1 | 7 p.m. | Roland Dille Center for the Arts Hansen Theatre

MSUM will host a free public screening of The Loyola Project, a 2022 documentary film about the 1963 Loyola University (Chicago) Ramblers men’s basketball team and the Game of Change, Thursday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. in the Roland Dille Center for the Arts Hansen Theatre.

The film details how the Ramblers, led by coach George Ireland, broke down racial barriers in college basketball on their path to becoming NCAA champions. Loyola-Chicago alum and basketball player Lucas Williamson is the narrator and co-writer of the documentary. Currently a guard for the Memphis Hustle, he says: “This is a story about history. But that history is still relevant.”

Because the Mississippi State legislature would not allow the team to play against black players, the coach, Babe McCarthy, took the team out of the state on a bus (in the middle of the night) before a court order could be delivered preventing them from leaving..

Jered Pigeon, MSUM’s Campus Diversity Officer and MSUM psychology major and Dragons women’s basketball player Natalie Jens, will facilitate a Q+A with the audience after the showing. Audience members will be able to engage in conversation and dialogue.

“Sports have historically been instrumental in pushing boundaries and challenging ideas of discrimination throughout our nation. Athletes and sports have a powerful platform for change and can impact the greater community,” Pigeon said. “Attendees will leave the event with a deeper understanding of inclusion and identified ways they can foster belonging in their environments.”

The screening is sponsored by MSUM’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Dragon Athletics, and the Student Athlete Advisory Committee.
