More than 400 MSUM students to graduate Dec. 14

Minnesota State University Moorhead will award degrees to more than 400 students during its fall commencement program on Thursday, Dec. 14, at 1 p.m. in the university’s Nemzek Fieldhouse. This includes 165 graduate students.
Moorhead Mayor Shelly Carlson will be the commencement speaker. Carlson earned a bachelor’s degree in legal assistance and a master’s degree in public, human services, and health administration from MSUM. She is the Criminal Justice Systems Manager at the Minnesota Elder Justice Center. She has served on the Moorhead Police Activities & Athletics League Board of Directors, the FM Area Foundation Women’s Fund Advisory Committee, Rainbow Bridge, and the YMCA, in addition to volunteering at the Rape and Abuse Crisis Center and Trinity Lutheran Church.
During her career, Carlson has provided training in 22 states, two U.S. territories and four countries on the topics of domestic violence, sexual assault and elder abuse. She was first elected to the City Council in 2018 and served on the Moorhead Library Board, Lake Agassiz Regional Library Board, Joint Powers Board, and the Metro Area Flood Diversion Board. She was appointed Mayor in February 2021 and simultaneously assumed the role of Flood Diversion Chair for 2021. She continues to serve on the Flood Diversion Board.
The student speaker will be Luke Meyer, a Brainerd Senior High School graduate from Baxter, Minn. He is graduating with a B.S.in Mathematics Education and a B.A. in Mathematics. Luke’s parents are David Meyer and Becky Meyer. He plans to substitute teach in the Fargo-Moorhead area this spring and find a teaching job in Minnesota for the fall.
