Turnitin has released a new AI detection tool
Turnitin has enabled “AI writing detection” in their Originality product, a tool we license currently and have integrated into D2L Brightspace.
Student papers submitted to an assignment folder that has Turnitin enabled will be automatically evaluated to determine if any portions of the work are likely to have been generated by an AI text generator such as ChatGPT. This functionality cannot be turned off. Students will not see the AI evaluation when they view the originality report for their submission.
Turnitin has a disclaimer on all reports stating that, because it may not always be accurate and may misidentify both human and AI-generated text, it should not be used as the sole basis for adverse actions against a student.
Consider how you might clearly communicate your expectations regarding AI text generators to your students. Incorporating AI tools into the classroom and assessing the writing process, instead of the final product, might better serve instructors who wish to prevent their students from submitting AI generated work as their own.
