George Floyd’s aunt, Angela Harrelson, to speak at MSUM Feb. 28
Lift Your Voice—How My Nephew George Floyd’s Murder Changed The World
Angela Harrelson, George Floyd’s aunt and author of Lift Your Voice: How My Nephew George Floyd’s Murder Changed The World, a memoir of faith, hope, and bravery, will speak at Minnesota State University Moorhead Tuesday, February 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the Roland Dille Center for the Arts Gaede Stage.
A book signing will follow the talk. Books will be available for cash-only purchase by Barnes & Noble.
In the book, Harrelson shares the behind-the-scenes story of George’s family—how he lived and why he died—and how the world can find a solution to racism through his death. Harrelson will discuss her memoir, life experiences, family and engage in a moderated discussion.
She is also the co-founder and co-chair of the George Floyd Global Memorial, whose vision is to bring community development to Minneapolis and inspire people to pursue racial justice worldwide.
The event is free and open to the public, but reservations are encouraged at mnstate.edu/tickets.
About Angela Harrelson
Angela Harrelson grew up poor, one of 13 brothers and sisters raised in a shack in the North Carolina woods. She was the first in her family to go to college, be commissioned into the military, and have a career as a professional nurse. Along the way, she and her family were exposed to the harshest forms of racism—from her childhood riding the school bus with white children who made the Black kids stand to racist commanding officers in the Air Force who told her they wanted her to fail.
Nothing stopped Angela, and nothing removed the hope in her heart that America could learn to stop hating people based on the color of their skin. Angela’s story focuses on how, after suddenly being thrust into the spotlight, she went on a quest to ensure her nephew did not die in vain.
This event is sponsored by MSUM’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion and MSUM’s Women’s Center.
