Campus News Named Best College Newscast in Eric Sevareid Awards and Best College News Magazine by Society of Professional Journalists
The Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association and the Society of Professional Journalists have both given first place honors to MSUM’s Campus News newscast.
Campus News took first place in the Student Newscast Category in its annual Eric Sevareid Awards. The Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association (MBJA) Eric Sevareid Awards covers the six-state region of Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Nebraska.
The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) also named MSUM’s Campus News as the winner in the student news magazine category in its annual Mark of Excellence Region 6 Awards. SPJ Region 6 includes the states of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. First place winners in each category advance to the national round of judging.
In addition, MSUM students earned numerous individual awards in both the SPJ and MBJA competitions for both television and radio reporting. Alex Larson also received a Crystal Pillar in National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Upper Midwest Student Production Awards in the Multimedia Journalist category. All the awards were presented over the weekend at the Midwest Journalism Conference in Minneapolis.
The Program Director for Campus News, Dr. Aaron Quanbeck, said that taking first in the newscast category is a major accomplishment and a recognition of how dedicated the students are in doing their best. “We compete with universities in a six-state region,” said Quanbeck, “so it’s gratifying to see that our students’ work stands out when compared with broadcast journalism programs from much larger schools.”
Campus News airs on Prairie Public Television at 8:30 AM during the spring semester and has been broadcast since the early 1980s. Archived newscasts and stories are available on the Campus News Youtube channel at www.youtube.com/MSUMCampusNews.
The MSUM students receiving awards in the radio categories were all a part of Dr. Quanbeck’s Broadcast Journalism class. Their work aired on KMSC’s Dragon Radio.
