Pahl wins silver ADDY at District 8 American Advertising Awards

Sydney Pahl ’18 (graphic design) received a Silver ADDY at the 2019 District 8 American Advertising Awards on April 11. The regional competition recognizes the advertising and creative excellence of professionals and students from Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

Pahl’s BFA senior project, “Valley 665 Complex,” was recognized with a Silver ADDY in the category of Integrated Brand Identity Campaign.

Pahl also won two Gold ADDYs and Student Best of Show for the same project at the AAF-ND ADDY Awards on February 22.

“Sydney has always been mindful of the interaction between physical, social, cultural, technological and economic factors, in addition to traditional visual concerns,” said Tom Anstadt, assistant professor of graphic design. “Understanding the culture and values of the end users of design ensured that her design solutions were appropriate and therefore successful.”

It came as no surprise to Anstadt that immediately following her graduation in December 2018, Pahl began working at Mills Marketing in Des Moines, Iowa, as a graphic designer.

“Design today is practiced in an interconnected world at an unprecedented level of complexity,” Anstadt said. “Exposing our students to the diversity of professional options and settings through internships, mentorship and professional portfolio reviews by practicing designers prepares them for the changed reality they will face after graduation.”
