Werre, Sibley present poster at IBBY in Athens
Pam Werre, Curriculum Materials Center librarian, and Carol Sibley, library professor emerita, presented a poster session at the 36th International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) in Athens, Greece on August 30, 2018. The title of their presentation was “East Meets West in the Middle: Fifty Years of Fiction about Refugees from Southeast Asia.” and focused on juvenile fiction published in English with Vietnamese or Hmong main characters since the end of the Vietnam War. The researchers analyzed the stories to determine prevalent themes of the refugee experience and calculated the percentage of authors who were cultural insiders vs. cultural outsiders.
IBBY is a non-profit international children’s literature organization whose mission is to promote international understanding through children’s books.
