The Advocate is accepting applications for next year

The Advocate is accepting applications for next year’s staff. Applications are due February 21. They can be emailed to business manager Logan Peterson at petersonlo@mnstate.edu, or dropped off at The Advocate office, Flora Frick 254A.

All staff positions are paid a weekly salary. Interviews will begin in March. Students with previous related experience are preferred, but it is not required. If students have questions, they can contact editor-in-chief Aaron Simmons.

Editor-in-chief

• Manages the newspaper with attention to visual content in all sections (photography and design).
• Oversees photographers.
• Works with the business manager to identify ads that need placing.
• Lays out initial “draft” of paper.
• Works with written content and web editors to conceptualize multimedia approaches to distributing online content.
• Compiles payroll with the help of business manager’s ad income spreadsheet.

News/Assistant Editor

• Manages the newspaper with attention to verbal content (news, variety and sports sections).
• Facilitates copy flow from curricular sources.
• Specifically manages the newspaper’s news section.
• Oversees editors of sports and variety sections as well as news and news “commentary” writers.
• Works with presentation and web editors to conceptualize multimedia approaches to distributing online content.
• Designs and edits section pages.

Online Manager

• Posts stories and photos on Advocate website
• Places ads according to Business Manager’s specifications
• Takes care of any technical details online

Ad/Business manager

• Sells ads and controls invoicing
• Communicates payroll elements influenced by ad sales to managing editors.
• Creates annual budget application to SABC
• Works with Editor-In-Chief to plan and execute budget with allocated funds and ad revenue

Variety editor

•  Works with the editor-in-chief and assistant editor to conceptualize section’s layout and art in conjunction with its verbal content (A&E, feature, “commentary”).
• Oversees variety writers.
• Designs and edits section pages.

Sports editor

• Works with the editor-in-chief and assistant editor to conceptualize section’s layout and art in conjunction with its verbal content.
• Oversees sports and sports “commentary” writers.
• Designs and edits section pages.

Creative Engagement Manager

• Manages social media, posting stories and writing a summary
• Takes photos, and directs freelance photographers
• Edits photos for print and online publishing
• Designs any graphic The Advocate might need 

Copy Editor

• Oversees final copy on every story
• Possesses excellent knowledge of grammar and syntax
• Well-versed in AP Style
