Culture, Environment, and Human Services in Tanzania

Dr. Bruce Roberts (Anthropology/Earth Science) and Dr. John Benson (School of Teaching and Learning) will be leading a four week study tour to Tanzania in May and June. Participants can sign up for the Education course, Anthropology course, or sign up for both. ANTH 390 (3 credits) /STL 390 (3 credits).

The trip will begin in Dar-es-Salaam and then proceed to meet with educational and medical personnel; visit schools and health facilities; climb and hike in the Usambara Mountains, Mount Kilimanjaro, and Mount Meru; and visit several of Tanzania’s world-renowned national parks. Both professors bring a wealth of knowledge of this area. Bruce Roberts is an anthropologist who did his doctoral dissertation work in East Africa and has led numerous study tours back to Kenya and Tanzania.

John Benson is a geographer working in the School of Teaching and Learning who grew up in Tanzania, the son of American missionaries. In his adult life, he has returned numerous times to do research on the geography of the country, its health care and education systems.
